Hard Reel Cases

Hey guys,

Just did a quick search and nothing really came up. Just seeing what products you use to transport your reels overseas on trips?

Whether is be a hard case or just a backpack.

I always carry reels as hand luggage Sam.  A good quality backpack does the job as does something like the 6 reel Shimano soft case.

And suppose the spools inbetween clothing etc in your main luggage

I have a few of these: http://total-fishing-holidays.com/fox-evolution-x-reel-case and they do an excellent job in keeping the reels safe.
They are hard cased and lined with foam.

Precisely, I put my reels in a back pack in hand luggage on my most recent trip to New Cal. The spools were wrapped in between clothing in my main luggage. I made the mistake of packing reels in my main luggage on my Bugatti trip and one of the bail arms on my 1000FA's was destroyed almost beyond recognition, luckily it was on the way home.

Backpack does the job for me.
I never have to take the spools of my reels when I travel, had the odd security guys taking a look at the reels but that's about it.

If I'm looking to get a hard case for my reels I'll be getting those pelican cases

Apparently fishing line is a security threat and some airlines make you pack your reels (or spools anyway) in your check-in bag.

I have a pelican case for my SLR, it is a very solid piece of work thats for sure.

A bigger one might be the go, will look into it.

On my most recent trip I carried five reels in neoprene reel bags complete with spools in my backpack without any issues. As a specialised piece of hand luggage the 6 reel Shimano bag also works well.

I spoke to customs hear in sydney befor i left to go to New Cal about spools being in your hand luggage,i spoke to custom officer called peter who has been there for many years,he said the spools in your back back are honestly fine,i said there are some issues that people have had befor with the spools being carried in there back backs with the bodies-he said if its purely a fishing trip and your carrying so many dollers worth of reels with you "as he new what a Shimano stella was" it is quiet understandable and the spools are no problems what so ever to be carried with there bodies in a back pack as hand luggage...

Guys, it's best not to flirt with danger.

Some people may get away with it - but how much will you kick yourself when that is the respective countries' policy or you have a grumpy security personnel on duty?

I have gotten away with it before, but I have also been stung - so why tempt fate when it is a simple matter of seperating spools from reel bodies. Carry the bodies on-board and the spools in your check-in.

I agree - I know it is permitted but I won't generally even run the risk of carrying the reels (minus spools) on board with me. The problem is what happens if security reject it. It's then a huge problem in some countries to be forced back out to check it in. I can't imagine the reels will be in one piece if I check my backpack in the way the luggage handlers seem to throw bags around.

Probably wise advice from Luke and Brandon.

In all my travels I have only once had a real problem carrying loaded reels on board. And I managed to sweet talk the crew into holding them for me in the cabin and I collected on exit. Perhaps I have just been lucky.
