Land Based Trip Late Nov 08
December 07, 2008, 03:44:01 PM
Just spent a couple of days on the rocks with a few mates chasing pelagics and GT's.
The spot is a good producer of Longtails,Big Spaniards,Bludger trevally and GT's.
The GT's seem to come on late afternoon the best and combined with a nice high tide the ingredients seemed right.
During the day we spun primarily with metals and pencil poppers for pelagics with PE3 and had regular tussles with tuna and mackeral.
Late arvo poppers came into the equation more for GT's.
I managed some nice longtails but a mate of mine 'Mario' managed a great fish which we put at about 25kg and was a good effort land based.

Cheers
Pete

Good one Pete, you've done it again, very versatile. How did the Williamson Popper stand up to casting of the rocks?
Were you just north of Bundy?

Hey Greg,
Yeah,The williamson seemed to do the job well.
I was using small heavy pencil poppers (as they cast well from the rocks).
I missed a BIG hit form a GT...well..he missed the popper really.
Up Gladstone way.

Hi Pete,

Yes released fine...He just had to dodge the 200kg Groper that sits on the edge of the rocks.. :D
There is a crack where you can wash fish up into which works really well.

LBG Rocks!!!

No pun intended...any big fish off the stones is a terrific catch.

Nice fish Peter. Sounds like you had a blast!

Wonder if we will see some big turkeys off the stones like some Japanese locations. I'd like a dollar for every popper that went East on 10kg mono when I was younger.
Now the gear is up to it, maybe some very large GEE's will get caught??

Whats the biggest you have encountered Peter??

Aaron.

Aaron.

Encountered 30kg models land based in the whitsundays.

This spot however, I know of a 33kg fish (which was sadly kept) that was landed so the big fish are there.

Have you tried closer to home Pete, DI, Dolphin Point or Hells Gate?

Spent a MASSIVE amount of time at Hells.
I have spun up longtails,rat kings,small GT's,Mackeral,jew etc....
But never seen any BIG GT's.
I have thrown big poppers around there too to try and raise one but no luck there yet.
I know they are here though.
DI I believe holds more GT's but I havent fished it.

hey peter,
excellent catch land base. i'm just wondering if u were using a longer rod for popping off the rocks or the usual 7-8ft?

Sorry for the late reply Bertrand.
I am currently using an 8ft rod which does the job nicely and I get good distance with it.
Obviously you sacrifice some casting distance but 10ft'ers of quality are VERY expensive.
