Topwater Caranx Ignobilis: Giant Trevally (GT) > Reports & Expeditions

Fiji (Kadavu Island) Popper Casting Report - Jan 09

(1/2) > >>

Adrian Watt:
A superb start to the summer season has seen glassy seas and acres of Yellowfin and skipjack tuna smashing bait balls far and wide. Most of the yellowfin Tuna are schoolie fish to 30lbs and casting poppers or slugs at foaming baitballs has been excellent fun on light tackle.

With the millpond conditions we have had unlimited access to all barrier reef areas. We have even been throwing poppers and dropping jigs on some reef breaks normally reserved for big wave surfers with a death wish.
The bite has been extraordinarily good with not just the GTs but a whole host of species nailing poppers including dogtooth tuna, green jobfish, red bass, bluefin Trevally, barracuda, mackerel and even small reef sharks climbing on. Best GT in the past few weeks was an 80lb fish for angler Phil Calderon from Costa Rica with Dan Ryan coming in a close second with a 30kg model.

We have just entered a week of two of monsoonal weather and short bursts of heavy rains are expected to colour the topwater easing the popper bite but concentrating the jigging action. It should only last for a week or two then the popper action should go crazy again.

And the best performing heavy tackle popper this month ?
The River2Sea 200mm Dumbell in dark blue / silver with an orange stripe belly.
