Line lay on new Stella 18K
January 20, 2009, 08:45:34 PM
I've just got my stella 18K back from shimano after a service and check-up following the Timor trip in December.

Everything seems to be fine.....but...

I've just stripped the line off and re-spooled to reverse the PE10 braid. Now the line lay is in a cone shape, skinny at the bottom and fat towards the drag adjuster end ??? >:(

Does it look like I need to add or take off a washer?

Any sound advice out there to save me some time with trial and error.

Thanks in Advance

you need to add a washer, Andy. If it is still noticeable that it is still coning, you might need to add another washer.
If it swims; I want to catch it!

it'll do the trick, Andy. You just got to get the number of washers right.

Spot on that fixed it, thankyou sir.

Something must have been slightly adjusted during the service perhaps as it was fine with 3 washers before that ??? ???

Is there anyone here that actually prefers to have coning on their stellas?

I don't think you will get many positives to that question Jay  :). Coning is mainly used with lines such as Fluorocarbon but not with modern day braids where a standard uniform lay is ideal.

actually, it really shows the amazing tolerances which these reels are built to in that a washer that must be something like .25mm thick can have such an impact. I had the same issue after my last service on my reels but one washer did the trick.

Coning is ok if you are a fast caster and you are hitting it with body rotation and the line is shooting fast from the spool! Normally the hip does most of it. It help line to leave the spool on a uniform pattern to avoid wrapping.

Of course you see a difference when you are power casting!
