We got this popping out at some islands close to Karratha. I'm not sure whether it's a brassy, small GT or something else.

Jay, it looks like a Blue Trevally, did the top half have a grey-blue tinge, it looks to have the scatted dark grey spots as well. Similer to a Bludger but to stocky and no dark blotches near the tail.

It's a bad photo but I definately didn't notice any grey blue tinge on the top half. If anything it almost looked like it had a bronzie colour on certain angles of the light.

I think you're right, either a GT or a Brassy (bit hard to tell from the photo). By the white on the lower part of the tail I'll say Brassy.

Trevallies are such a hard species to ID, especially at that size. Everyone seems to have a different oppinion. Guess I'll never know exactly what it is eh

Stop Press:
: Papuan or Brassy Trevally [
Caranx papuensis
] often mistaken for a smaller GT, typically peppered with dark spots, distinct white trailing edge on the lower lobe of the tail. Papuan, Brassy, Small GT, sounds like it.

Its a small GT.
Black Trevally are awesome fighters for their size, caught plenty last year at the Rowleys off the back of the boat at night.

I'd also say Brassy/Papuensis -
Caranx papuensis

Dunno, looks a bit stockier than the pic you posted Greg.
Not sure if this makes it any easier but here's a smaller one we caught on the same day.

a happy moments is also known as a black trevally. I tell you what, you get stung by one and you'll bloody know about it........ What a great name - happy moments
One of the guides caught one when we were bottom bouncing with plastics at Shoalwater. He didn't know what it was and was about the grab it when the other two of us started screaming at him not to touch it!!
