Rod actions

(1/1)

Andrew Poulos:
hi all,

Just reading about the various actions different rods have - mid to fast or parabolic. What is your preference when poppering ? Does it depend on where youa re and if shallow'ish water where a fast action rod is used, or deeper water and then go for a more parabolic style ? Curious to see what others think and how it impacts the lures you choose..

Andrew

Andrew ,

In GT fishing I use Carpenter SP710H for surface popper , LR86 for pencil popper and TBL711/35RF for stickbait rather than condition of the terrain .

Andrew Poulos:
How does those rods differ so you can get the most out of the different lures?

SP rods are stiff , designed to transmit most of the jerk action to the surface popper while LR rods are designed to cast a long way and still have enough stiffness to " walk the dog " the percil popper and TBL rods are designed with sensitive tip but with strong back bone to " feel " the swimming action of the stickbait .

Using TBL for surface popper means you lost most of the jerk action to the rod and using SP with stickbait , you may not be able to feel anything . Both TBL n SP can be used with pencil popper .

Jon - as our resident Carpenter expert, would you be kind enough to write a new thread taking our members through the Carpenter range of popping rods and what the characteristics of each model is?
