David, What sort of rod and reel are you using? Are you trying to get a good distance cast or is it happening during most situations?
I'm using a Stella 8000FA on a Carpenter SP 78H. I feel pretty good about my casts - maybe 30-40m. I'm not on a boat, but from a kayak I'm casting as far as I've ever cast.
Pete, what do you mean by a "flatter" braid?
Travis, I don't think I've got any loose loops of line on my spool. It's winding pretty tightly. And it's definitely twist that is causing the birds nests because if I can get them undone, the line is really anxious to twist back around on itself.
However, an overfilled spool could be a problem? I need to respool again this week so maybe I'll do it as normal, then post a picture up here and get feedback on it. Also, I would say that my line cones towards the front.
I usually have a swivel on the end of my twisted leader, though I've recently switched to a solid ring. I got twist with both setups.
Yesterday, with a new spool and no Dojo Peche trolling, I
only was popping. Just using a Sea Frog and an Anthias and I'm pretty sure those lures weren't spinning as I was retrieving them. After cutting out the first knot, I let the line loose and trolled it (without a leader) for 15 minutes, then tied on a new bimini to the twisted leader. 10 minutes later I had another huge knot, so I went into a beach to relieve some stress and tie on a new bimini. That one actually lasted awhile, but I only had 30m of braid left on my spool and I was getting into mono on each cast.
