Light-medium popping rod.
May 27, 2009, 04:43:33 PM
hey guys i have just got a 6"3 monster mesh pe2-4 for some whitsunday fishing and thought that i may have been able to do some popping with the 6"3 model but as i have been hearing, the size of the model would be way to small to get any sort of distance cast out of. My dilemna now is that i cannot replace this model for a longer one as the rod is on our boat on its way to the whitsundays as we speak. Does anyone know of a good budget priced popping rod in the 300-350au$ in about pe2-4 or 3-5 as i will be running 50lb braid

Thanks
Nathan

ok thanks mate. I was also just looking at the t curve gt special and it looks very impressive for its price. Do you thing the gt special would be good to go with the twinpower 10000fc and 50lb braid? also is the gt special just 1 size or is there more than 1 size?

The T-Curve comes in a PE3 and PE5 model. Don't get the GT Special if you're planning to fish the lines you're looking to fish! It's just too much rod.
If it swims; I want to catch it!

Nathan, I can only tell you that I regard that rod as a PE8-10 rod. It is not a PE3 rod!!
If it swims; I want to catch it!

There is a heap of choice in the market in that weight bracket and in your price range. Here are a few you could consider:

T-Curve 10-15kg
T-Curve 15-24kg
Live Fibre Texalium 15-24kg
Ugly Stick Bluewater 8-15kg
Daiwa Monster Mesh PE3-6
If it swims; I want to catch it!

A Muramura is a class above in price and weight.

Nathan, I use a couple of Carpenters as my primary popping sticks LR88 and SP78 EXH, however, I just picked up the 7' version of the Monster Mesh PE 3-6.  It does a great job of casting and working 30 - 60 gram poppers (say roosta 135's for example) and looks like it will do a reasonable job as a light jig stick as well (120 - 180grms in shallow water.  I got it for a trip to Fiji at Christmas for lighter tackle work (40 - 50lb) around the lagoons for reefies and bluefin T :).

It might be worth checking out!  sub $300 at my local - and built to last and travel by the look of it.

Hi Nathan I also have the 7' foot monster mesh with a saltiga 4500 running 50lb and as stated by Peter it is great for the lighter lures. I also have the 8'3" monster mesh pe6-8 wich I run a saltiga 6500 and 80lb and it is awesome for the 100-130 gram poppers like the large river to sea dumb bells. Both very good rods especially for the price.

I took both rods to Fiji and landed decent fish on both and they both have a very nice action only thing about the 8'3' rod is it really is only good for the mid size Gt's 10-20kg but if it was any heaver it wouldnt be as good for casting the lighter poppers
