What Twinpower to buy, 6000 or 10000?
August 06, 2009, 06:48:10 PM
I'm going to buy a spinning reel for medium/light popping/jigging.

The Shimano Twinpower FC seems to be a good reel for the money but I'm not sure if I should get the 6000 or the 10000. I heard that they have the same body. Is it only the rotor and spool that differs?

yes you are right there Lars, only the rotor and spool is bigger on the TP10000fc, If you are going to get a twinpower the 10000 is  the go as it can hold more line, and is marginly lighter. I have a 10000fc myself and have tangled with a 30kg plus fish on it and it just doesnt have enough power or drag to get the fish in, not saying you cant do it, its definately possible it will just be hard. It doesnt have much drag for the size of the reel, Only about 7kg. When popping the handle has a tendancy to come loose. I would personally opt for the catalina 4500h.

Thanks for the info, Nathan. Just 7 kg drag? That's a bit low, as you say. I expected something like 10-12 kg, at least.

Maybe I should go with the Saragosa 8000F instead.

The TP10000FC has 10kg practical drag.

Yes Luke I had heard the TP had 10kg+ worth of drag then when i tested it it was nowhere near that and was quite dissapointed and after having big runs from GT's on max drag it has seemed to take away the sound when winding the drag cap down. It has alot less drag than the stradic 8000 which is half its price! I would personally opt for the saragosa 8000 or the catalina as I have mentioned.

You could always put carbontex drag washers on the TP though.

thanks
Nathan

Btw. I am a shimano man and was very suprised at the Twinpowers peformance myself, and a friend of mine who has the same reel has had the exact same problems as me.

There may be a fault with your reel's drag system - may I suggest you send in for service.

Thanks for all info regarding these reels :)

I will probably go with the TP10K. Reasons:

- Holds more line
- Light
- High gear
- Extra spool

I use a Torium for heavy jigging so I don't want a heavy spinner.

Maybe I'll upgrade the washers. Any tips for this?

if you want to upgrade the washers
which it would be Jack Eskine Carbontex washer
then our sponser can do that for you .
and also they do sell the TP10K too .
fishhead will look after you .

good luck to your decision

I have heard the samething about the new Twin Power. Was considering buying the largest size for a PE 5-6 outfit but 2 experienced anglers and tackle store owners out of Singapore that I know reckoned the drags were piss weak and to stick to a Stella FA 8K or 10k. When you look at the prices of the reels I would heed their advice as I have 4 Stellas and am happy with all of them. Just my $0.02 worth.

I'll report my findings after I get the TP10K. Of course I would also like a Stella but that would be almost 3 times as expensive. I will only be using PE 3-4 line on it so hopefully it will be OK.

I've also found a deal on a Caranx Kaibutsu Light Pleasure. I think this will be a good combo.

I use a TP SW 10000XG for most of my big fish fishing - 49KG doggie is the biggest to date and I just wound down the drag on it until it stopped - no issues although not caught a GT with it yet ...
