I've read conflicting reports about the need to upgrade Saltiga S-Extreme Reel drags.  ???

Can someone please verify if drag should be upgraded with Carbontex washers and Cal's grease?  ::)

The reel in question was purchased in April 2009 and is a 4500Z model. ;D

Many Thanks  ;)

Craig, I'm pretty certain they don't but the person who would know for sure is Duncan O'Connell. Hopefully, he'll see this thread and respond

craig, u shouldn't have to upgrade the washers on that reel, they should have carbontex washers in them already.

Sunny, the new washers apparently are not carbontex - even though they sure look like it to me!

Brandon, have heard from people close to Brad (Daiwa GM) that they are made by the same guys that make carbontex.. they just call it some other name. I could be wrong though, but they sure do look like carbontex to me as well.

Hi Craig,

You don't need to upgrade the drag in the S-Extreme Reels.  A few years ago the Daiwa reel techs came out from Japan testing gear and checking out Australian conditions.  Duncan met with them and went through how we fish our reels here and what we in the Australian market wanted from the drags in Saltigas, and what we didn't like about the models at that time.  Daiwa took this on board and Daiwa Australia produced the S-Extreme reels with the new improved drag built for the Australian market. The material looks like carbontex only more refined.

For those of you who love your Dogfights keep an eye out for the new Saltiga S-Extreme Maverick (4500H & 6500H).  We had the reels in store for an exhibition a few weeks ago and they are very sexy.  Essentially the new and improved Dogfight (no need for drag upgrades in these either).  The Maverick will be due out in about October and again are built exclusively for Australia.

Cheers

Interesting to see if anything else apart from the drag washers have changed. It would be really good to see Daiwa make some 'drag' advancements in the big spin class as apposed to just changing drag - washer composition, and the reel colour schemes, again, on the same reels.

the new drag is very smooth, Andy and I think it is an understatement to simply say that it is a change of the composition. It's not simply just a change to new carbontex (or whatever they want to call it) washers. The whole stack has changed including the metal washers that are used.

Sure, if you were looking for a revolutionary new drag system, that is not the case.

Brandon, that is refreshing news, just what the robust saltiga needs.

I have the Extreme 6500, and yes it was purposely built for the Australian Mkt, some punters dont like it becuase it is fire enginge Red, i dont mind, because if i see someone walking down the street with a bright red reel it's a fair chance it will be mine...hahaha
