Lord Howe options
April 28, 2008, 08:09:37 AM
I've always wanted to go to Lord Howe but travelling with the other half was a problem as it's not tropical enough for her...
Fortunately we've got some friends who now want to come along and it looks like it will happen.  Guys can fish, girls can....anyway.

Hoodlums, big kings and unstoppables....

Any season and weather advice from anyone who's been there?  I'm concerned about how hard it will be to get a charter and the possibility of a week of solid unfishable conditions.  What are thoughts about Lord Howe as a destination?

I hear the land based fishing is great anyway, but other than that it might be nature walks and day spas with the girls  ::)

Appreciate your feedback,

Cheers Dave

Dave
Lord Howe, being an isolated island in the middle of the ocean can be pretty windy at times, particularly in winter (AKA the 'windy season' to the locals). My guesstimation is that in summer you will probably get 4-5 out of 7 days outside the lagoon, while in winter it is more like 3 from 7. The good thing about Lord Howe is that there is heaps of land based fishing when the outside stuff isn't possible. I worked over there for a few months several years ago (before jigging and popping gear really existed). I did a lot of livebaiting and flyfishing off the rocks getting busted off and occasionally landing good kings and yellowfin. I would love to be able to throw stickbaits off the rocks at the massive kings and beer barrel yellowfin that swim past. As an example, the biggest King caught off the rocks there at the time was about 44kg, landed by an old local on a 200lb handline. Best yellowfin off the rocks was 50kg, caught by my mate Jason and myself on a 15kg stand up outfit. My PB king off the rocks was only about 16kg but I was blown away by bigger fish almost every time I went out.
As a time to go, I would pick from about christmas to April - the weather is the most stable and the greatest number of fishing options are available. From memory, the big kings are pretty much a year round thing, but there are plenty of other pelagics around while the warm currents are running in Summer and Autumn. Operators I would speak to would be Gary Crombie (Oblivienne sportfishing) and Keith (can't remember the surname) at Ocean View apartments.

Cheers

Thanks Duncan.

I will look at trying to make it over summer  ;)
Doing a bit of landbased and a few charters sounds like the way to go.
I'm sure the tackle shop over their does a pretty good buissiness, especially in heavy leader!

Cheers Dave.

Hi Dave,

I just came back from a jigging trip on Lord Howe last week. Despite it being winter, we were blessed with perfect conditions - and i mean perfect. we landed kings up to 15kgs, and got punished by some larger fish too!!!

Our skipper (Jack Shick) said that the big kings (20-40kgs) turn up in November and hang around for a few months. At this time, the weather is more consistent also, allowing more days on the water.

In terms of the rock fishing - it's totally crazy. there are fish bloody everywhere. For livebait, don't be scared to put out a 1-2kg parrot fish... they get nailed. The Old Gulch can be fished easily in a southerly and the Clear Place in a Nor Easter. TAKE NOTE - you don't even have to use livies. you can catch loads of mullet at the jetty, and then take them across to the Clear Place and put them out under floats - the kings stil smash them even dead - it's awesome.

Summer is definitely the best time to go. Jack Shick is a good skipper so have a chat to him - he's a 5th Generation Islander, so he knows his stuff.

Cheers

AS Duncan said, Keith Galloway is the man over there. He is a very experienced rock fisherman from Jervis Bay area and has moved to the island (married in) for about 15 years or so. He has moved the jigging scene forward and is in high demand from the Japanese jigging market.

November-January for the new gulch, just watch the nesting Boobies getting there (angry buggers) and old Gulch or clear place from then until May when the weather really becomes iffy. The lagoons are great for fly, plastics and spinning and if you are really up for an adventure ask Keith about the 'other side of the island'. Totally agree that between Nov-Apr is your best bet for getting out on charters too.
