Im the guy on the left, Jigging in 300m plus.  Its what we have to do out of my home port (Raglan New Zealand) to get these tasty treats.  Wind and current play a massive part in if jigging is practical on the day.  Plus its 40 miles to get to the spot.

Back in 2003, I jigged the area off Break Sea Spit during a filming session.
We were hoping for Blue Eye Trevalla or Hapuka though we got more kingies, snapper, pearl pearch and amberjack.

Average depth was 200-250, with an Amberjack around the 18kg mark being my most interesting fish to pull out of 287m on a popping outfit.
Manual reels made our arms tire a tad more quickly than the Japanese client with his Daiwa Dendoh reel!

Aaron.

crazy bastards - as if it wasn't bad enough jigging at that depth, you were using popping outfits. Btw, for anyone who is interested to know, Tim Baker was jigging with a BG Jack!! Talk about a glutton for punishment   :D
If it swims; I want to catch it!

I have seen some of the footage I think, looked bloody painful!

Brandon,

Eddie Kazama and Daiyo Urishido only had ONE dedicated jig outfit on board, which was the very light hiramasa stick/daiwa tanancom outfit that he STILL dropped 600gm jigs down with! That didn't end up very well!

All the rest were GT outfits which in typical Aussie & South African style, we said what the heck: that is what we had to use!

It was a bit of hysteria dropping jigs down on that type of gear  ;D

Tim loved that rod....it had serious mojo for him!

Having added a few years, I'm not so sure if he loves it as much any more

Tim has gone a little soft in the past few years.

Still good for a laugh though.

2 months ago, fished off Tweed Heads in 220 meters of water - generally, this is a blue marlin waypoint though after much deliberation on whether the show on the sounder was bait or fish, we decided to deploy some jigs. After some joking around, a 500gm Katch 1 jig, 300 williamson benthos and 400g jigging master alien jig was dropped to the bottom. After three jerks, we were all hooked up. Completely stunned, we all pulled up kingies of around 10-12kg. I tried a slow rolling action with bozo's katch 1 and managed nannygai. We found if you slowed your jigs right down you would either get a nanny or pearl pearch. Lumo was a must though on some part of the lure....

cheers,

Scott
