Dogfight Drag
Brandon Khoo:
Sunny, I suspect that these are old stock, not 2009 models. Perhaps Duncan or one of our friendly staff from Fishhead can clarify ;)
Duncan O'Connell:
Currently we have the the Aussie models with the new carbon drags (Maverick and S-Extreme) I'll check with Daiwa today about carbon drags in the international models.
Ben, in answer to your questions
More pressure? About the same maximum drag
Smoother drag under load? under heavy loads of around 15kg and over they have a smoother start-up - this was the main reason behind the switch to carbon.
Did you use carbontex? With grease? can be used dry, but a thin smear of grease is preferable, again to help with the start up.
What were the steel washers like ? Properly flat? Yes, the washers are machined flat
Ben Gudgeon:
Cheers for the info, I don't know what the drag stack is made of in the Dogfight, it looks like nothing I have seen in other daiwa reels, it almost looks like nylon or has a plastic appearance. Defiantly doesn't resemble carbontex Erskine style washers. ??
As for the steel washers, I asked about them because every other high end daiwa reel we,ve had(certate, blacksheep,CVZ etc) has not had proper flat washers, wet and dry on a thick piece of glass shows high spots on steel washers like they had been punched out. The improvement to the above reels drag smoothness and pressure was awesome once the washers had the wet and dry treatment.
Cheers Ben,
Brandon Khoo:
Ben, conversely to your experience, I've never seen a steel washer come out of a Dogfight that wasn't flat. At the drag pressures we are fishing, a washer that isn't flat will see the standard or carbontex washers destroyed in very short time
Ben Gudgeon:
Brandon , I am no way a reel expert and have only pulled apart a few reels, the ones we did upgrade had uneven washers which only showed up after rubbing on the wet and dry. The improvement was great and made by both the flattening of the steel washers and the carbontex washers.
Here is a pic of a standard washer from a certate HD, it wasnt very old when removed but had seen a fair workout. The steel washers got a rub while they were out too. :)
Kind regards Ben
