Shimano Ultralight Carbon Knob Installation
January 06, 2010, 06:09:19 PM
Tried to install one of these on my 20000SW today but couldn't screw the end cap onto the knob with the rubber o-ring in place. I've tried screwing it in by force, only to succeed in hacking up the soft aluminium cap and having it protrude 2mm or so. Either the groove that the o-ring is sitting in is too shallow, the rubber too thick, or the space in the knob is too tight. Anyone encountered this problem before? I'm thinking of omitting the o-ring all together and using a generous coating of grease to discourage water from getting in.

Installed with out the o-ring:

Eric, you need to stretch the o-ring over the lip it currently sits at so that it sits flat underneath the top edge.

Thanks Luke, I tried your suggestion. I finally managed to get the o-ring to stay above the groove and tried screwing it in with these results:

Left: without o-ring, Right: with o-ring

Still looks like its sticking out a bit, but I've never seen one from the factory to compare with.

They should sit flush.

Maybe you have damaged the thread?

Either way, it's only a cap fitting. If it is damaged, you'll need to pack the cavity with grease and make the best of it.

It is supposed to sit flush. You actually need a smaller and thinner O ring. The one it comes with will never sit flush. You will need to visit a hardware store.

I opened the JDM model and O ring is much smaller.

Cannot say I have that problem, mine sits flush and is aftermarket (not purchased with JDM model)

Joe, you sure on this? Both of mine were acquired here and I had no problems whatsoever.

Also, the aftermarket carbon knob would be a relatively low sales items. Is there even an export model or do Shimano simply export the JDM to all markets?
If it swims; I want to catch it!

I am sure. It just comes down to the O ring. I also have purchased knobs here and there are the same as the JDM version. Maybe you were lucky to get the right O ring while Eric and i didnt.

Its not that big a deal... an O ring is not even a $1. All 3 of my knobs now sit flush.

Just pointing out Eric is better off with a $1 outlay rather than going without a O ring if he wants it to sit flush.... and the O ring is supposed to sit in the groove, not above it.

I would need to open my cap to check but I thought mine sat above unlike yours.

Is there an instruction with the JDM?

Thanks for the reply guys, I've been in S'pore for a week so excuse the late reply.

Luke, the thread isn't damaged, the cap screws in perfectly without the o-ring. For the time being I've packed it with grease. I didn't receive any instructions with these handles.
I suspect they've shipped with the wrong o-rings (thanks for checking Joseph), the tolerances between the cap and carbon fibre are way too tight to fit the bulky o-ring that came with both handles I bought.

Now I just need to find somewhere to get some thinner o-rings, tried Bunnings but couldn't find any thin enough.

I'll have a look at the dimensions and see if I can find any at Shimano service for you.

guys,
i am having a problem with trying to take off this knob from my 4000xg JDM as the main shaft(second pic) seems not holding to the main handle
as everytime i try to take off the screw(fisrt pic) the main shaft where the screw mounts follows the screw spinning as well.
anyone have the same issue with their JDM?
i even try to take this to shimano, but they couldnt take it off, and all i got is my handle and my knob was scratched/damage deeply and badly(not sure how, but i guess it looks like a damage from a some sort of pliers)
