I can't get over the price that retailers are asking for spools these days.. seriously almost half the price of a complete reel

hmm.....I think 3 of those spool prices are not quite right.....

8k more expensive than 10k spool???

I recently paid $360 for my 20k Max spool and spooled with $300 of varivas big tuna PE 6!!
And thats only a couple of hundred from buying another 20k reel!!! :o :o

I was going to get a spare spool for my penn 850ssm..the reel cost me $129..the spare spool $90....needless to say , didnt bother getting a spare spool. I would have been better off getting another reel for parts.

mmm looks like we should be expanding into the US market   :)

The prices for spare spools for Shimano and Daiwa reels at Fish Head in Australia are:

Stella 20,000SW   $299
Stella 18,000 SW   $299
Stella 20,000 Max  $360

Dogfight       $299
6500 Expedition   $299

These prices are in Aussie dollars

Nice prices - whats the biggest Stella spool I can get away with on a Twinpower SW 12000?

Alex, off the top of my head, I think a 10000 spool. Of course, from an aftermarket perspective, the Studio Ocean Mark No Limits has a greater capacity but I don't know if this will fit on a Twinpower. I assume it would but am not sure.
If it swims; I want to catch it!

The No Limits spool will fit the new Twin Power. Finding one will be the hard part!

Something I hadn't thought about till recently was say you upgrade the 10k spool to something with a larger diameter/capacity.  This will shrink the size of the drag washers so will the marketed max drag value also decrease?

Travis, was thinking the same thing. Unless of course, they increase the number of washers to maintain the surface area.

How much drag pressure do we really need?

Sometimes all of it!  :D Not that you fish the whole time like it but when you do need super heavy or locked up for that 20 or 30 seconds it can be pretty handy to not being trying to palm the spool as you work the rod.

Agree about the possibility of number of washers - i'm sure someone on here knows.
