Beefing up your Assists - Step by Step
March 15, 2010, 07:33:18 PM

What you want to do is cut two equal length pieces of assist cord. These pieces need to be approx 1.5 to 2 x the length you would regularly use for tying assists ( like I said, it uses a fair amount )

Thread both sections of the Kevlar through the spilt ring to equal length:

Next step, once you have plaited a section long enough, is to thread all 4 tag ends in through the hooks eye. Make sure to use proper jigging hooks with the kinked eye, and thread the tag end into the eye from the hook point side:

Once you have threaded the Kevlar round into the knot, make sure all the strands are lying neatly and then start snugging them down one by one:

You should end up with something looking like this before you really tighten it down:

You then can trim the tag ends of the 4 strands of Kevlar, and finish it off with a small section of Heat shrink over the tag ends to neaten it up if you wish, or leave them as is.
Below is an example of two finished Assists.

The Top one is using 240lb JigStar Kevlar and the bottom is using 200lb Jigstar Kevlar:

A close up of the 240lb rig:

And a shot of the two showing the plait:

Here is a little something for you for that comment Mr Sharples!

 ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

I actually managed a few hours chasing Garrick on Saturday morning... first morning off in 66 days in a row.... couple follows and one smash and grab but no solid hook up... Bloody entertaining paddling around spinning off the front of a canoe.... Runbohs and Voladors enjoyed the swim....

Gotta tell you it was more than fooking fantastic to be casting a line again....

Now go tie some of these up, you gonna need them for those St.Brando Doggies mate... don't come back crying that you got cut off bro, my heart will bleed nothing but lumpy custard for you! :o

I'm using 700lb kevlar cord, that stuff is bulletproof. If I get bitten off on that it's either a snotty cuda that I don't want to deal with or an Orca that I have no business catching! Joking aside I like that set up, the weave will give some nice cushioning as well, won't be able to pull so tight and get sheared off.

So jealous of your Leerie fishing. I'd kill for a 10kg one on surface lure in the surf or off the rocks. When Mark moves back to SA I'm going to pester him until he invites me to his place at Cape St Francis and go hunt leeries and monster kob.

Andre. thanks for taking the effort to post that.
I think if there are toothy creatures around, you could consider simply create your assist using split rings and swivels or wire. I've tried zylon and I didn't like it.
If it swims; I want to catch it!
