Indonesia -Bali-Sumbawa-and other options
July 04, 2007, 06:53:59 AM
Managed to get 3 weeks holiday out of my boss at the end of the year so I will head back to Indonesia.
Will probably do a week in Bali with two weeks surfing at lakey peak in Sumbawa.

Any jigging trips running out of bali?  I usually stay in Tuban so hitch a ride with the local boats but would like to do a more specialised trip this year.

Also any trips out of Sumbawa? we caught some great fish off there in 2005 on a surf charter boat and would really like to get into some more of that action.

Probably travel solo this year but if anyone wants to join in your more than welcome

Cheers

Mike

Hi Mike ,

Contact my friend JohnBudi @ +628123804808 , he hangs around fishing tackles shops and knows how to get cheap charter for jigging . FYI , due to strong current in the Straits of Lombok and Badung , a minimum jig weight is 500 gr. so you need a stout rod + enough capacity reel for the task .

As for Sumbawa , the south coast are good but are more well known for the surfing beaches , I usually fish in Komodo n Sumba but one needs a better boat than what the locals can supply . Strictly CnR in Komodo with a few rules to follow .

I was in Bali last week , the place is full of tourists both local n overseas and yes , lots of surfers due to higher than usual tide movements coupled with strong wind from the south west . Offshore G Land in East Java has been producing big YFTs too but you need a good boat , the buoys are some 60~90 nmiles from the coast line .

I went to Komodo in 2004 or 05( all the trips seem to warp into one) onboard a dive charter but got to very little fishing due to one reasone or another. what is the best time to go there and how much does a trip cost?

Mike ,

You will be public enemy No. 1 among the divers if you go fishing when onboard a dive boat , the best time to go there is when the easterly or the westerly winds subside so all areas can be fished , any other time you may be confined to certain areas only .

Divers arent as exciting as GTs on the end of 80lb line ...they dont swim fast or reef you up much... :D....but you do have to be careful when you land them.

Jon Li- My tip to komodo wasnt really for fishing and I dont dive so there was other attractive oppourtunities to be had.....  ;)
Wet season say nov/dec should be ok for the winds then?

Cam - never surfed there and have no ambition to, spend all year surfing lefts up here and I am natural so I need some good rights..... much like the island one a good swell ;D

I went fishing in bali once but it was unplanned and ended up being a bit of a waste of money. We were going for tuna, but didn't catch anything. If I went to bali again I'd definately do some research.

Are there any guys that do specialised jig/pop charters? What kind of sportfish are on offer around bali? Any GT's? Dogtooth?

Mike ,

Who can tell mowaday , I believe you guys are having quite different weather pattern down under too . If the season is normal , yes Nov./Dec. but this year , I won't be too sure .

Jay ,

Tuna ( YFT ) is seasonal but jigging for amberjack n dogtooth tuna , yes there are a few charter operator there but for popping , you got to be more to the east starting the south coast of Lombok , Sumbawa n Komodo , etc. .
