Surface coating on poppers/stickbaits
June 05, 2007, 02:41:20 PM
Recently I cast  poppers for several days in the Andamans and I was amazed how quickly the hooks rubbed off the paintwork on my poppers . Do you think one could give them a coat of clear ( or even coloured! ) nail polish to protect them or would the resulting reflections be too much .Perhaps the dazzle of reflected light would an attraction , afterall the abalone stickbaits are highly  prized .

I touch up my lures where the paint has been battered, but dont use nail polish. I tried it but found it went gluggy and didnt work too well, so just use other paints or clear over the top. Didnt seem to hurt them at all. On some I sprinkled some silver glitter on them as well....

Stephen,

Nail polish tends to go yellow after exposure to salt water and the sun.

Perhaps you could try some kind of spray on varnish - you could mix it with some glitter?

Find a good hobby shop and get some of the Humbrol Enamels the finish is preety durable i've found after touching up some of my lures.
