DefI Muthos 100HHH GT - land based popping?
June 17, 2010, 12:41:53 PM
Hi All,
I asked a while back about reels and all the info guided me to a 10000 stella, thanks to all who helped there.    Went down the beach with it all stoked.   Nothing for the first three hours and then a blinder of a run hit me.   Clamped down on the drag and couldn't stop it at all.  Only had 50lb line on as that was plenty for all the fish i had seen before.     Got close to the end of the spool so went harder on the drag and popped the line.   First time was nice to see big fish were around, when it happened three more times in two hours it got rather tedious!!

So now i'm keen to get a rod more upto the job and the Defi Muthos looks like it could be the deal.   Has anyone used one of these or seen one used and give me a little more insight if it really stands up to the job of handling PE 8?   Biggest fish caught there is in the 20kg range and i guess that was what i was on the end of.  The thing didn't even stop, just peeled off 200 meters like a freight train.

tight lines... Al

Hi Al,

The Defi Muthos 100HHH is a very powerful rod for shorebased GT, kings and tuna fishing. When compared to a more conventional length GT rod, it doesn't have as much straight up and down lifting power. It is more aimed at casting big lures a long way and fighting the fish out in front of you. On a straight deadlift on flat ground I felt the rod was comfortable with around 7kg. The rod may have been capable of more but it would be a challenge for most anglers to do it comfortably with all that length working against you. With a fish running way from me off the rocks it would be quite comfortable to fish a whole lot more drag. We put 15kg of pressure through the rod at a typical low rockfishing angle, without any drama at all.
If distance casting and line management around rocks and bommies is an issue in the spots that you fish, then the Defi Muthos is a great way to go for nailing some big critters. If you are lucky enough to fish really deep ledges where the fish bite at your feet, then a more conventional GT stick may be as good or even better for the straight out lifting power.

Hi Duncan,
Thanks alot for your advice there.    I went with a 8'4" Tenryu in the end.   Its long enough to cast well and casting isn't of super high priority as the bite can come anywhere where i fish.   its a heavy outfit for sure but seems the only way to stop the brutes!   Caught a couple of small ones on the first outing which were dispatched no problem at all.  Now its just waiting for the big one to come along again....    Thanks again for your insight.   The general vibe i seem to get is these long rods are fine for casting but once hooked if you have anything sizeable on the odds are stacked against you big time.  let see how it works....
