Chris, you do not really need to splice a loop onto the assist cord, easiest way is just fold the cord in half, thread the two tag ends through the eye of the hook, then tie a double granny knot to the hook, pull up tight and you've got your assist hook done. There's various other knots you can use, but this is the quickest and hasn't let me down yet. You can also add a dab of glue to the knot or heat shrink over it if you like.
