Certate 3500HD or Stella 5000SW ?
Mario Benedict:
Hi All,
I'm looking to get into another reel in the above sizes. Should I go the certate or the stella ? Will probably use it mostly for casting surface lures around the harbour markers. I will also be using it for very light jigging with water depths up to 30-40m max. The 3500HD have a gear ratio of 4.8:1 and the stella a whopping 6.2:1. Will jigging with such high ratio be a problem ?
What are your comments ?
And for those who already have those reels what rods do you match it up with ?
The two sizes are comparable IMO, the stella at the size looks rather cute :-)
Pricewise the stella is about $130 dearer, but it does have more bearings and more drags.
I have a certate in the smaller size (2000) and stella in the bigger sizes(18 and 20k), and so far I can't really fault any of them. Both are really good reels.
Cheers,
Mario
Chris Webster:
G'Day Mario,
Mate, i know everyone here will have a different opinion but i think the Certate is the go.
I own a 10000SW and a Certate (albeit the 3000 2010 model) but to be honest i cannot fault the Certate.
Or even get a 3500 Certate for surface and a 8000SW Stella for jigging. There you go. Problem solved.
I will wait until the lunchtime beers wear off before i recommend a rod.
Cheers,
Chris
Mario Benedict:
thanks Chris,
I wish I have the luxury to buy the 2 reels. I have to sell a couple of my bream reels to buy this one in the first place :-) haha
The KGS-70MH looks like it will fit the certate or stella nicely looking at the specs.

Me and a few mates have blown up a couple of certates in the last 6 months, not enjoyable for died in the wool daiwa fans. If it were me, I'd now go the stella. I've got 4 daiwas in the 2500 size, been using them for years, no troubles. 2 x 3500s burried in last 18 months.
You are right with the retreive though, the 3500 makes a great soft plastics reel but is too slow for high speed metals and jigging! the 5000sw is great for metals and small poppers -but a bit whacky for plastics. I seemed to have settled now on the low speed shimano (you can get a twinpower PG) and run it with the 6000 spool - delivers almost the best of both worlds. The speed on the HG 5000 is good for jigging, but there is not realy enough leverage in the whole setup, it feels like the handle is too short!
Hope that helps!
Mario Benedict:
certainly helped Peter much appreciated.
I'm leaning towards the stella at the moment, with the dollar so good these days it's even harder to say no to the stella.
