homemade poppers

Thought i would have a go at making a popper and although not as spiffy as Angus's lot (I cant compete with those) I wanted to have a go! We are heading to Fiji in Jan and i though it would be quite satisfying to catch a GT on you very own home made lure.

Don't have a finished product yet but i thought some of you might like to see the progress.

Mine is made from Blackwood (True blue Aussie)

G'day Sam,

Your lures are looking really good I reckon mate.....at least you appear to have access to far better tools than me, like a drill press and decent lathe. Some of those images you posted I can't open unfortunately, but from what I can see, you are definitely on the right track! Excellent work, great to see others out there making their own lures. Getting a fish to eat a lure you've made yourself is very satisfying, and of course saves a few bob along the way.

G'day Sam, that paint job looks tops. What's the story behind the crazy lure shape? Has the working action of the lure been tested yet?

FWIW, I try and conduct some sort of test after I've sealed the timber, but before any colour has been applied, so that if the lure is a dud, then I don't need to waste any further time and materials by painting it.

Where'd you get the stick-on eyes? Or have you masked and painted them?

Hey Angus,

The lure shape may well be an issue as no testing has been done yet. I made one with a much better shape but dug in too far on the lathe around the centre swivel hole and took a big chunk out.

I think i will attempt 1 or two more before the trip and will do the test after sealing like you suggested.

The eyes are cut with scissors and made from:

white part - a christmas card envelope
red part - another christmas card envelope
Black part - Wrapping paper

Stuck on with that kids white glue, but then covered with Epoxy

they are really efficient shapes and fun to fish in clear water when you can see the fish leaving his rock and go to attack lure









last time i have been fishing, i had more fishes than mates with expensive lures i was pride of my work

I don't think stick baits generally go to well where we are going unfortunately.

What base coat do you use and where do you get it from?

Seems like broom handles just are not up to scratch as a good popper material anymore

for the moment i really make low cost (and quality) lures, i don't have tools to finish them well
- i put epoxy resin on the wood
- one coat of white
- colors with spray can paint (sorry for my english..)
- and a coat of varnish

You would go the Epoxy last though yeah?

I know you can mix colours and glitter etc through the Epoxy, but i am keen to hear about the initial sealant or base coat as i have just used a basic primer coat.
