your thoughts on gipang 83h vs rf gt82lc
December 01, 2010, 10:16:52 AM
Hey guys, I'm looking for a rod that will fish pe6 or 8 depending on situation for stickbaits in the 80-150g range and poppers in the 80-130g range

I've nailed it down to the hots 83h and 82lc, I just wanted to hear your feedback on these two rods and how they compare with each other, are they any other recomendations on similar specd rods? I prefer the longer length for casting distance, it's important for me where I'm fishing.

I've also considered carpenter dj83mh or even the ml and possibly the new ep35 coming out, how would these compare to the two mentioned? worth hanging out for the ep? worth spending the extra dollars for the dj83?

Thanks guys

Gavin I have an 82LC and a DJ83MH and have often used both side by side.

Very different rods really, more so than I imagined. Both are excellent casting rods and are in the easy to use all day category.  The DJ83MH has a lot more power at the base though and would probably be overkill for the task you identify in your first sentence.  For example, I often fish the 83MH with PE10, large sticks and poppers to 160 grams.

Would not like to comment on the Hots 83H.

thanks for the response Mark, thats just what I suspected, so would it be fair to assume that the 82lc is more comparable to say the dj83ml?

for those that have used these rods, would you think the dj83ml is too light for cup faced poppers 125g and under?

Gavin

The 82LC is a really nice allrounder for the lures you mention, though it won't load so well with the sub 100g stuff. Should still cast the smaller stuff a reasonable distance all the same.
Another couple of rods which work well in that range would be the FCL Labo UCB80Ext - an 8' rod which fishes PE8 comfortably and casts 100-160g extremely well. It is also one of the lightest GT rods around, the crisp graphite makes it surprisingly good on larger cup face poppers - though I do use mine for stickbaits much of the time.
The other is the Zenaq 83-7 an 8'3" PE7-8 rod which casts similar weights. It has a mid stiffness tip which works stick baits and poppers fairly equally. Once the tip folds away, the zenaq has a pretty grunty mid and butt section too.

Cheers

Duncan

I see that the price of the 82LC on your website is $2,494. That must be an error right?

Hi Mark,

Thanks for bringing that to our attention.  You could have two of them for that as well as a bunch of poppers :)

The correct price is AU$1145 or if you live overseas AU$1030

I have both those rods, the 82LC Ripple is man enough to fish lures to 180g and won't really load casting under 120g. It is stiff enough to fish poppers well, nice on sinking stickbaits but a bit too stiff for floating stickbaits. PE8-10.

The Hots 823H is a lot softer, won't cast over 130g and isn't great to pop chuggers. Its a great rod on PE6 and stickbaits/pencils and small GTs up to say 30kg over more open ground. I wouldn't use it where there are bigger fish or where the structure means you have to stop fish quickly.

I used the Hots rod in Seychelles where the average size is 20kg and the drop off is close so you can let fish run. There it was a perfect rod.
