These fish were caught by trolling but this is the area we will be fishing for the SBT.

Images thanks to the big man himself - Brendan Wing.

It screams super heavy lines and rods and my back hurts even thinking about it :).

Seriously, fantastic opportunity.

Just an observation...at the first hint of a mishandled or dead GT on this site there is an up roar and arm flailing like no ones business - and let's face it they aren't exactly an uncommon species.  Yet on the flip side we have SBT, a listed endangered species, and huge specimens dead on the deck doesn't raise an eyebrow...? ???

Must have missed this.

Let's discuss this in a new thread please - not hijack this one.

Jon: if you have anything of value to comment, make sure to do it in the new thread.

In the past 4 years if have landed approx 300 Bluefin tuna at EHN, of which i have kept approximately 10 fish.  Mostly the big ones.  The reason is simple if you choose to fish for these giants you must be prepared to keep them as they will fight themselves to a standstill.  You only get them boatside once they die of exhaustion.  So you either fish for them or you dont.  The main difference between them and GT's tho is the SBT is a wonderful eating fish, the GT is not and is full of sig poison.

On a personal note, it is my opinion the SBT is in NOT endangered in our waters.  Perhaps Bluefin are worldwide but the SBT variety seems to be about in epic numbers around south Aus and this is somehting that has rarely been seen in recent decades.  I am not going to argue with this but their are plenty of great minds inc marine scientists who agree with this.  Getting the world to recognize and updat ethe status will be virtually impossible.  IMO they are the back BIG TIME.  Schools that 1000's of kilometres long.

I'll Be in Launceston studying at that time of the year, was planning to do my own trip with a few boys from Uni. But if the oppurtunity ever came up to fish with the likes of you blokes, I would take it up every day of the week. Very very interested! :)
