Shimano Spheros 14000
September 25, 2007, 02:08:40 AM
Hi guys - I've got one of these I plan to use for GTs in the Maldives with 80-100lb braid. Do you reckon it'll stand up to heavy drag settings and wear and tear? I'm reluctant to buy a Stella for one trip but if you reckon this reel will get smashed then I'll cough up the $690!

Cheers for any advice.

Even with the upgrade drag kit they still recommend not going over 50lb! If you've got the cash go for the Stella for sure!!

50lb braid? What does that allow me in terms of drag set, 20lb?

Are there any decent reels i can get for less than the price of a Stella that'll do the job? I'm in the UK so I'd have to mail order it I guess we just don't have the kit here!

David - what you need to think about is how much you are going to use the reel. If this is a once in a blue moon trip, then I would think twice about getting a Stella. It's a lot of money for one fishing trip. On the other hand, if you do this regularly, then a Stella 10000 or a Saltiga Dogfight may be a worthwhile investment - as would a good popping rod.

If you are not going to get a Stella/Saltiga, I'd recommend that you upgrade your drag with carbontex washers. As you're in the UK, the best way to do this is to order directly from Smooth Drag. Get in touch with Dawn there and feel free to tell her I recommended you contact her.

Go to the link and go down the left hand column for carbontex. Near the bottom, you will see Spheros 14000A. You will also need a small quantity of Cal's Universal grease which they can supply as well. Use only a tiny quantity of it on the washers. This is one situation where more is not better! When you install, ensure you put everything back exactly the way in came out. if not, that is a recipe for disaster.

The carbontex should get your drag to the level where you can handle most fish and SHOULD prevent a metldown on a very big fish. Don't forget that notwithstanding the maximum drag the reel can exert, you can always palm the reel to exert more resistance which you will find most experienced fishos do anyway.

The upgraded Spheros should do the trick but don't expect it to be a Stella.

Good luck with your trip.

The Spheros will handle 80lb braid. Not to its fullest obviously. Drag max is about 9-10kg without the upgrade, but if a decent GT hopped on the lure, you can always use your hand to lock up the spool a bit. Obviously not as nice as a stella but they certainly good enough for the odd fish.

However, its a stupid idea to take only 1 spheros on a special overseas popping trip. Maybe buy another 1 or 2 of them for the price and still have some money left over  :D, oor bite the bullet and buy a stella.

BTW I have a spheros 12000 and its served me pretty well, got a 20kg albacore on it on Sunday, and once the boat stopped it only got about 5m off me. Alby's are no GT obviously, but still, made me that bit more confident in it.

Albys are good and not half bad eating either. 20kg is a nice fish!

Tell me about it!!! ;D I was rapt, part of a 20kg and 17kg double, and I got the big one, whooop. Trolling but hey, couldnt care less, it was caught on jigging gear, and trolling a surface plug, so im nearly there  ;)

I'll crank out a photo when they get developed.

Cheers for the advice guys. I'm spending 6 days on a liveaboard trip in the Maldives but I'll be flyfishing and jigging as well so spending the money on a Stella is a bit hard to swallow, except I may go to Mozambique later next year... Might have to flip a coin on this one! I'll definately get the upgrade drag kit.

If I do get a Stella I'll probably get the 20000 as there are dogtooth and bigger yellowfins there as well. Does anyone know if the 10000 spool fits the 20000 body? Or if there are any aftermarket shallow spools available for the 20000?

Thanks again!

David,

The spools are inter-changable.
I think you should get both!! Then you would have a spare spool, handle, body........etc.
And you can never have enough fishing gear  ;D

Things are moving fast here, now looking at a Stella SW10000HG (is that the right name?), looks like it comes with both 10000 and 16000 spools so this would be the one to go for. I've got it at around US$815 from a shop in the US but they're out of stock.

Does anyone know where else I can get one and what the price would be?

Cheers again guys.

boy, you changed your mind quickly!

My suggestion is to get it from eBay from one of the established sellers like reelseller or shimreels. I've also bought good from Reels Extreme. I'd get a 10000FA and a spare spool separately and forget about the SW10000HG. It'll work out cheaper. If you're going to have two spools. I'd suggest a 10000 and 20000 spool anyway rather than the 16000.

Hello Brandon

When you've bought stuff off Ebay, have you ever been hit with duty? Ever bought a reel from Ebay?

Good thread this...I'm going to Maldives in December so have a shopping list as well. :)

Stephen - if the item is under $1,000, it should be no problem. if it is sent in by standard mail, EMS etc, I've never had any issue at all and I've had dozens of parcels come in over the years. Courier companies like Fedex used to be a pain but I understand that they have now also gone to $1,000.

I have made numerous purchases from eBay over the years and I have bought on numerous occasions from the sellers I recommended below.

I'm guessing I don't need to upgrade the drag on a Stella? I've got an 8' Shimao Lesath GT rod to go with it, not sure if you guys get them there but its a pretty strong stick, anyone used/seen one? They may call them something different over there.

Stephen - Have you been given any intel on what type of kit/lures to bring with you? I know there are GTs, YFT and dogtooth there but am a bit in the dark as to exactly what to bring.

Do you reckon I can use the big Yo Zuri poppers if I upgrade the trebles and split rings? Looked at some of ther Japanese poppers and I'll find it hard to spend $60 a lure if I'm going to lose it in the bricks...

This maybe should be on a different thread but don't want to be starting threads all over the place!
