Giant Snapper on a stick bait
March 10, 2011, 05:50:27 AM
Well it had to happen one day but i was still shocked to see the red flanks of a snapper coming up through the water column with a stick bait hanging out of its mouth.
The fish went the good old fashioned 20 pounds.
It was caught on one of Wahyu's Angel Tackle lures(which are great) and of course a Carpenter rod.

The angler was of course Bunzo a regular on here. Well done mate i am still fizzing on this capture while i write this.
The fish was weighed and released, it swam away really well.

Brandon,

Good luck on the light Gear,
I have had my arse kicked in shallow water (5m) a couple of times on plastics.
Cant get their heads up and they bury you into the kelp even on 20lb.

Hi Mark,

We catch them in Moreton Bay QLD, site casting to them with small poppers in the shallows around the reefs and I thought that was good -

 - But never a horse like that, RESPECT - and on a stick bait, that is so cool ! He would have had some fight on the take...... Hmmmm (note to self) maybe take some sliders next time...

Well done mate

Very nice Fish Greg.

Just a quick Question..... I have all three of the Angel Tackle Stick Bait range the Roso (Floating stick bait) ' Jero (Sinking stick bait) ' Rojo (Floating stick bait) & i think i have them rigged the same way as you have them rigged with a treble up front and a single at the rear. My Question is........ Do you have the rear hook with the point facing up or is it facing down.

Cheer's Rob
Cheers,
Rob

Great job Greg!

I know so little about NZ fish... what species of snapper is that?  Golden Snapper (lutjanus Johnni)?

Hi Mark, it does not belong to the Lutjanidae family, pretty sure Pagrus auratus is the name for it.

Hi Mark,

It's a Pink Snapper (Pagrus auratus) - although its a 'snapper' its not actually a lutjanid.

Very similar to madai (red seabream) in Japan

Got it Jay and Kasey and many thanks.  It's a porgi/sea bream and not a true snapper.  I think I knew that fish as Silver Sea Bream?

Thanks all to the well wishers, certainly surprised me when I saw the flash of red in the water thinking I had a 10-12kg Kingi on, Mark nearly fell out of his chair :o. Things got back to normal today with a few Kingies with one about 17kg and loosing one to the reef of mid 20kg size, took a Gamma with it too  :'(.
Last day tomorrow [of four] of Pete and my 'Extreme' experience, luck with top weather and a variety of fish, a 'Monster Class' Couta, Mako Shark, Kawahi [Aust Salmon], Snapper and few Kingies, trip report next week from Pete  :).

Rob, I allway's have the rear hook point up.

     Bun

Brandon,

PE 3 or 4 would be more advisable.....I have been getting dusted on 20lb.
Problem is they bust you on the leader and if you go to heavy you wont get the hits.
In the shallow 5m stuff it is hard to get their head up.....They can really pull.
Buns one gave him a bit of curry on the heavy kingy gear.!
Best of luck next week.
