No idea James as rod has just been listed. Probably a year later?

Cheers,
Tak

Tak, I am in the market for a Carpenter rod to handle large GTs as I am planning to go to Oman.  I currently have the Coral Viper for poppers and
Endless Passion 82/38 for sticks and I adore both. I plan on bringing these two rods, but I feel like I need 1 more "Power" rod that I can comfortably cast all day
and handle 170 gram poppers and has enough backbone to put some hurt on the fish.

I've got my eye on the Blue Chaser BLC83/40R PowerMax since it appears to meet my requirements - heavy drag, light weight, good casting length...
Any insight you can provide on
this rod will be very helpful.  Is this rod designed for poppers or sticks or both?  Do I need to be looking at other rods like the Monster Hunter?

thx in advance!
-Mark

Hi Mark,

BLC rods have softest tip compare to other rods with similar butt power across the range and not ideal for using poppers at all. They are also not design for fighting large GTs.

Tak

Mark, I spoke to Tak and I will respond on the Monster Hunter seeing I have more experience with this range of rod than Tak and I did the primary testing work on the Extreme. The Monster Hunter range is a class up in power from rods like the CV and EP.

Having a powerful rod though, is not necessarily the answer. If the maximum drag you can fish falls within the capacity of the EP or CV you currently have, then you will not get much, if any, advantage out of a heavier rod. It could possibly even prove to be disadvantageous. If, however, you have the skill and strength to utilise the stronger rod, then by all means, you will probably find one of the Monster Hunters advantageous in Oman.

There is no doubt that the Monster Hunter range is more capable for the brawling battles that are required in shallow water - if you can utilise them effectively. As to which model, that is again dependent on your capabilities and how you want to fish in terms of line weight and lure size.

As an aside, we have of late been getting a number of questions about people hearing of the merits of the BLC range of rods for GTs. I want to reiterate that this range of rods is not made for GTs. They are made for yellowtail kings. To use one of these for GTs is akin to using a bass or bream rod for mangrove jacks. That is about the best analogy I can give.
If it swims; I want to catch it!

BLC84/25 R-PM is finally available in Australia.

BLC83/40R-PM is now also restocked.

Hi Tak,
I'm looking for BLC 83/40 R-PM or BLC 80/40 PM SC, targeting BFT up to 100 kg (normaly 50 kg) whit 70-100 gr stickbait
Could you explain the differences between these 2 rods (action, castability, power etc...)
Thanks
Antonino

Hi Antonino,

The main different, as you probably know by now, is the length. There is tiny bits of adjustment on the curve but there is not so much different between them.

So choice will be whether casting distance with some advantage for lure actioning is more important for you or rod handling during fight is more important.

I know Kenji san uses more 80/40 recently but that is because he is not big angler and he sees advantage on rod handling side.

Cheers.
