Drive Out Trip 27 June 2011:
Damon:- It blew HARD today, lots of wind, but that did not stop us. First spot we stopped at produced a couple of missed hook-ups and a solid 25kg GT to start the day. We missed a couple more GTs after this, and landed one more before we moved to the next reef north. No water to get into the blue holes so we drifted the ledge for some good action on shark mackerel and GTs. We landed 2 GTs on the ledge and missed a couple more, then went for a troll.
One little spot produced 5 hookups, with a big GT landed on a 40lb spin rod on the troll, as well as a bunch of gold spot and shark mackerel. We lost a big Spaniard and then went looking for blue holes for reef walking. No luck with the blue holes, but a few more GTs were boated after lunch, and then we finished the day with a spectacular 28kg GT in 1m of crystal clear water. It was a perfect fight, and the perfect way to finish the day.
Nick:- Putting over the flats looking at the channel we had to cross this morning didn't look very friendly. Pressing on was well worth it as we found safe homage on top of the flats and managed to sneak into a few holes which weren't very productive unfortunately. The guys seemed to have run out of steam casting by mid morning so we set the trolling rods out and were hoping to get a feed for lunch. With sharkies making up most of the catch we decided to cast a few more lures onto the flats which produced a decent size spangled emporer which was enjoyed by all at lunch back on odyssey. The afternoon fish saw a step up in action with one of our first stops we had a triple hookup....snapped one rod but landed the fish and unfortunately lost the other two but got the guys' batteries charged up for the next couple of hours. We managed to land another GT and a few more sharkies to close the day.
Clint: Another very windy start to the day. I looked hard for locations for the boys to cast down wind for GTs to make things easier.. we fished an awesome ledge with the current perfectly folding over and immediately first cast we got a look from a GT. As we moved further up the ledge Brad hooked a big barracuda and when we were about to land it there were about a dozen Spanish following it. I got the boys to cast straight after it and we hooked a massive Spanish on a stickbait which popped the line. The lure that Brad had just lost floated to the top only to be eaten by a GT.The action was going off! We fished the ledge for plenty more hook-ups but just could not get a fish to the boat. After that we did some light tackle and got some red throat and right at the end of the day we got a big Spanish a nice way to finish the day.
Peter: Windy conditions today but it didn't seem to put a holt on the fishing too much which was good. We started off the day jumping into some awesome looking blue holes and drains in the search for a GT but unfortunately with no result. So we then decided to go for a troll and it proved to be very productive managing to land 6 nice size Spanish one of which wouldn't of been shy of 30kg. After coming back to the mother ship for lunch we spent the rest of the day casting for another GT and all we managed to get was another Spanish of good size jumping onto the stick bait. All in all a fairly productive day despite the weather.
