Morning All

Im heading down to Cairns from Hong Kong for a day out with Blackout Sports Fishing, and will be getting in early the day before my charter. I will head to the tackle shop first to stock up, but then have the whole afternoon to myself, would any of you have any info/tips on where I might be able to go for a little land-based fishing, sea or estuary, with poppers or dropshots? I am taking my normal GT popping stuff, but will also take some light tackle, so just some small gt's or queenies will be fun. I appreciate that guys dont like to give away personal fishing spots, and fully understand if you dont, but here is my email address if you dont want to give any info directly to the public. [email protected]. Of course any info given will be kept to myself, and taken quitely back to Hong Kong with me!!

On another note, I just got back from 3 days in the Seychelles (Family friends live there) and a friend of mine took me out for a little fishing around Mahe island. We got into some good fish, popping for small GT's, Bigeyes and Goldens as well as the odd Garfish! If you are going to Seychelles at all get hold of me and I will pass you onto this friend of mine, he runs a fantastic guiding operation to all islands in the Seychelles and really knows his stuff, my profile pic of this Golden is proof enough! He specialises in GT's and Bonefishing. Check out his website at www.seyfly.com.

Thanks for any info, it is much appreciated!!

Simon  unless you are really looking to do some heavy poppping, you don't need to bring much at all with Kerry. he is a well stocked with gear. Shore fishing from Cairns is limited. You may find some popping options north of Cairns but you will need a car and it will be hard work. I hope you have good weather.
If it swims; I want to catch it!

Hi Brandon

Thanks for the reply. I have all of tuesday afternoon to kill, and a car, so would you suggest i head up north? i will have a heavy popping rod, and a light baitcaster with me. I have heard that the fishing in the cairns river is good to, does one need a boat or is it accesible by land?

i am really looking forward to the day out with Kerry, i have checked the forecast and it seems good for wed morning, im holding thumbs it sticks!!

have a good weekend!

Simon, as Brandon said the land-based fishing here is very limited.  As for Cairns Inlet, well it is possible to get a few jacks without too much effort, but I wouldn't say the fishing is "good" - well not compared to the Cape anyway.

Wednesday should be pretty good weather wise (maybe a shower though).  It's probably a few days early for peak time in my opinion, but you should get onto some action.  I went out last Wednesday and got a couple but overall it was a bit slow.  Have a look at some of my recent reports and you might get an idea of what to expect.

I will be interested to see how you go.

can anyone tell me exactly how you determine ideal days for popping, i understand its a combination of tides and the moon, but not sure quite how it works....any advice?

Simon - GTs like current and are particuarly active when there is a lot of current. The times with the most current are generally those where there are the biggest movements between high and low tide. This usually occurs during the new and full moon.
If it swims; I want to catch it!
