Bali or Fiji
July 08, 2011, 10:25:22 AM
Hi guys,
I'm perplexed, big word I know. I'm looking at a cheap(ish) holiday for two where she can dive and I can pop for gt in later this year or mar/apr next year. We went to Ono island Fiji in January this year and i nailed on my 4th cast my first decent gt at 17kg, no monster but it did the damage and I'm keen for more. I'd like to be able to target GT's, of all sizes, as well as the other incidentals that come with it. Tackle will be GT special and 8k Stella with a 16k no limits spool with 50 and 80lb braid on the spools as well as a 20lb light spin for fun n games, i also have a 50-80 jig stick i would be taking. She wants to dive, experienced 100+ dives, and sit in a hammock under a tree reading.

We really enjoyed Fiji and would happily return, but we like to vary our destinations and I was thinking of Bali, but I don't know much about the place or it's potential. A search on here has confused me with some suggestions that the fishing is very hit and miss while others suggest it's good to go.

I need a good laid back approach without the commercialised epi centres of the major resorts. That's why we liked Ono so much, after the initial shock of the isolation which took about 3hrs to overcome and realise the bliss of it all.

Airfares between Sydney and Bali/Fiji are very similar with $200-300 difference, and accommodation costs would be similar I'm guessing. I just need to know which parts of Bali i should be looking at.

If you had the choice, where would you head and why?

Josh

You could fish pretty much the same waters as the Ono lodge from Matava, also on Kadavu. They have an excellent diving side to their operation. I did the same thing with my missus 2 years ago.
Alternatively you could extricate Dave Noble from of his nappy changing duties and get him sorting out some diving at Ono, Dave?
Cheers
Dan

Matava has both awesome diving and great fishing. Has a very similar feel to ONo with on a few guests at a time not as for south as Ono. Hands down best all round holiday I have had.

Thanks dan, l'll get in touch with some of the agents soon.

Are there any islands around Bali that have regular turtle populations/landings that also have decent gt fishing?

What is Lombok like as a fishing destination?

Josh

Missed your reply Andrew as I posted.

We stayed at Mai Dive on Ono, really small resort with a focus on diving but the owner had plans on developing his fishing facilities. The price was great and the staff were brilliant and we are looking at a return if we can't find a better suggestion.
