CAR MATE ROD TUBES
August 06, 2011, 09:19:51 AM
Hi guy's i am new to this site. I just bought a car mate rod tube and it's not as tough and robust as i thought. I was wondering if there was a way to strengthen it as it feels soft when you extend it. I'm scared of putting expensive fishing rods in it when putting it on the plane. As i know how baggage handlers treat long packages (seen it first hand).
Cheers Jim

not much you can do, Jim. That's how they are made. If you don't like it, I am sure you will have no trouble selling it on the forum

When I fished at Bugatti we had about 8 carmates on board... no one suffered any rod casualties. I've used mine on a few trips now and haven't had any dramas.. I don't think you really have much to worry about.

I had the great pleasure of having a delayed flight to Hamilton Island once, so was at the gate and got to see the baggage handler throw my car mate about 10-12 feet up into the baggage hold of the plane, wasn't concerned and no problem. Mine has been to new cal, Fiji, NZ, Nth Qld multiple times, it has some scratches and scuffs but ive never had a rod damaged in it. I actually don't mind that the shell is a little flexible because I assume this means it is not brittle and less likely to crack.

Comparing Carmate and Nature Boys, how many popping rods (PE6-12) can be fitted in each of them?

cheers

Not sure about the Nature Boys but I'm pretty sure there are people who've fit 7-8 in the Carmate. I lack the patience to try and fit that many in and usually stop at about 5.
