Shimano Saragosa
September 18, 2011, 10:14:36 PM
Looking for a new spinning reel to take to Aitutaki as a back up to my fly fishing gear.
looking at either the Shimano Saragosa 8000f or it's bigger brother the 10000f. Looking to try for some Travelly that are there, not sure of what type or size are there. Any Help you with experance can give would be much appriciated, thinking of using 50lb powerpro braid. It's a long way to go from the uk to find you have bought the wrong reel.

Hi doug
im from the uk and had a similar question a while ago. you will need different tackle for the GT's i have done lots of reasearch and had to settle on the saragosa 14000f which is seriously big reel  - but you need it for the drag. rods are something else too. the nearest travel rod that may be upto the job is a snowbee deep blue popping rod that can cast upto 165grammes. Gt's are awesome and have serious power and due o the terraine that they live around its hit and try to hold stuff.exillerating but prepare to lose fish is the coral etc. hope this hels

There are a few threads going on 360tuna about the 10k.  The 10 has the beefed up guts of the 14k and 18k but with the smaller size.  It's still pretty new, but seems to be a nice mid priced option.  You also might take a look at the Daiwa Saltist 5000 or the VanStall VM150.

May be a bot out of the price range of a sagagosa but have you considered a second hand Stella or Saltiga.
There are also a few cheapish Daiwa Catalina's on the market at the moment (i.e: $500 or less if you can bargain).
