I think it is more a reflection of individual perceptions. Tak and I also have a different view on this. Like Duncan, I personally feel the CV has a slightly stronger tip than the EP myself but he feels differently. I think at best, the difference is marginal.

CV79/40 has softer tip and bit more all rounder in terms of lure selection and it can be used with higher drag for larger fish.

The Coral Viper is stiffer at the tip than the other two rods, it makes a great all-round stickbait/medium popper rod. However, if you are looking for something more dedicated to stickbaiting, then I would look more at the EP or Ultimo.

A bit difficult comparing a 8'5" rod and a 7'9" rod with difference of 8" ( nominal ) in my opinion but CV79/40 is stiffer than EP85/36 which is more " whippy " in my hand , perhaps a better comparison is EP82/38 which is closer in length and in it's power rating ( Carpenter rating wise ) .

I think Jon has hit it on the head - hard to do comparisons between rods of such hugely different lengths.

The answer still the same EP82/38 is an easier casting rod than the already easy to cast CV79/40 , as for back bone , etc. , will have to wait for next week after my trip to the Molluccas .

Off all the places anywhere on earth I think the Banda Sea has the most potential for truly undiscovered monster GT sites.  If only the logistics were not so damned difficult!

guys, some bend on the ep82/38.
first time GT angler got baptism of fire from Tual GT, he did konishi's style high stick tough
the fish on this fight is probably about 15kg ish
