Qantas Excess Baggage

Got a flight coming up to NC that was booked on Air Calin but unfortunately the flight is operated by Qantas. This really annoys me as the Air Calin 10kg sporting goods allowance is only applicable to flights operated by Air Calin. Last time I got caught out like this Qantas tried to sting me with a $650 excess but I refused to pay, spoke to the general manager and got it waived  I'm not counting on getting away with it again and was wondering if it's possible to pre-book excess on this flight? I know how to do it for flights booked through Qantas but unsure how to go about it this way?

Maybe time to invest in Qantas club membership Jay..?
Or, Just hope it's not a full plane and you get someone at the check-in desk who is sympathetic and in a good mood. Same with the customs / security person if you're taking reels in carry on. No set rule as far as I know.

I don't think you can buy excess up-front with Qantas. The easiest thing to do is what David has suggested - invest in a Qantas Club membership.

I agree that Qantas club is the best way to avoid this.

I have also had issues with lures in my hand carry due to the lead in them.
While they have never been confiscated or have not been made to check them in, i have had times when i was made to take them all out of the bag and each lure is inspected which can take some time.

I don't think you can buy excess up-front with Qantas. The easiest thing to do is what David has suggested - invest in a Qantas Club membership.

You can book excess up front with Qantas on both domestic and international flights but since I booked this flight through Air Calin it doesn't appear on my frequent flyer login which is where I usually add additional baggage to my booking.

They don't miss you, Jay. It's $840 annually but if you pay for four years, it's less than $500 per year. It's worthwhile if you do a few trips a year.

Qantas have changed their excess baggage rules and you can now pre purchase 2 additional pieces (up to 23 kg) for $20 per piece. A very recent ammendment is to only allow 2 additional prepaid pieces. see link below.

I am off to the Montebellos in 4 weeks and continually check their rules as they seem to make small changes all the time.

Can bring reels loaded with lines as "Carry-On" baggage? Any guidelines?
Last time i heard, you can bring on the reels but not the lines.
How about poppers, stickbaits and jigs?
Also, does rod case is included in the 23kg checked baggage?

No, rod is not included.

Jay,  the rod tube is included as part of the 23kg. Qantas do not provide a sporting equipment allowance.

Wan, generally, they will permit reels with lines but you never know when you will get a difficult officer. Same with jigs and poppers. If you carry it, you take the risk.

The checked baggage allowances for Qantas domestic flights has changed from a weight allowance to a piece allowance with maximum weights. Qantas has also made changes to checked baggage allowances for international flights and infants.

Economy   1 piece (maximum 23kg)


If you have a rod tube surely this means you have two pieces.
