Carpenter CV 79/40 question
October 13, 2011, 10:20:47 PM
Not sure if i should go with a stella 10 000 with 16k SOM spool or a stella 18000. This will be for pe8 work. 18k might be a bit unbalanced do you think?

Haven't used an 18000 on my Coral Viper but the Stella 10000 with a SOM 16000 spool holds an adequate amount of PE8 and is so comfortable and light to use with this rod.

The lightweight viper is perfect match for the 10k/16k PE8 set up, put your 18k on a PE10 chugging rod and you've covered your GT needs.

250m

this must be "motorized-handaligned-spooled" coz tried by using the reel itself on SMP#8, can pack only ~210m. :(

Hi Wan,

I have varivas GT Max PE8 on 2 SOM 16K spools and was able to get 260m on each though stripped them back to 250m for safer casting. I put the line on manually but as tight as i can get it.

Sure you did not mis-count the markings?

Andy, didnt miscount the marking.
Did pack SMP PE#8 with motorized-handaligned-spooled" this morning on SOM No Limit 16000, very high tension, managed ~220m.
Also packed SOM 20000 No Limit with the same SMP#8, manage 350m. Got balance ~ 30m of unused very ridiculous expensive line.
Maybe SMP diameter is larger than Avani GT? >:(

cheers

Hi Wan,

I spooled up these 2 particular SOM16k spools around a year ago, I wrote in permanent marker on one of the spools "260 m" of PE8, having spooled the PE8 on 2 spools i'm confident i did not miscount. here is a link to the SOM site which indicates the 16k should get 250m of PE8 on, http://www.studio-oceanmark.com/ltd/LTD_2009_11.html , I've also been able to get 325m of PE6 on the 16k spool which is indicated in the link and also nice for tuna.

As for the SOM 20k i cannot comment, but it sounds right, I got no more than 325m of PE8 on an SOM18k spool. I'd also say PE8 SMP is the same diameter as PE8 GT Max. Wan something is not right here!!

Bit late on this one but my comments very much ditto Andy's.

Stella 10000 with SOM NL 16000 is a perfect combo with a CV7940 - probably my favourite set up of all.

Just on the line cap of a SOM 16000, I have never quite managed to get on 250m of GT MaxPE8 without it feeling a bit overloaded and I usually settle for 235-240 m. I do think the SOM spool is more prone to wind knots when full than a standard Stella spool.  That's my experience anyway, and for that reason I tend to under-spool a touch I guess.
