Most of the time, I only need to apply a little pressure to the spool before the jig hits the water surface and before it hits the bottom to prevet overruns. All things being equal, free spool does make a difference. I guess I could do with more free spool on my OJ 4000P!

Hi Guys,

There seems to be a great focus on what was a very small segment.  Honestly, I wasn't mad about the overhead 'vs' spinning comparison.  Liu is a very good angler and I suspect could have landed his fish quicker if the equipment was reversed.  Poor little Kevin (JM Malaysia) was a bit sea sick, and had a sore back too.  I wouldnt make too much of this and I most certainly wouldnt mis-interpret any comment in relation to the outstanding manufacturer of the spinning reel.

As one poster observed, Taiwan jigging (remember it's in 180m so not ideally suited to spinners) is geared towards efficiency, the fish are kept and sold at market.

The Progear Oceanus performed very well and the freespool was certainly one advantage.  Yes, an educated thumb on the flange controls things but, first to the bottom is often first to hook up.

I apologise if I have misinterpreted the details of the video, but definitly I have not in anyway felt disturbed by the video. So there is no need, absolutly none at all, Dr Mark, to make this a personal issue.

But I do feel a little unfair and uncalled for, for Liu to throw that challenge. I have fished with you, Dr Mark, before and I understand you find nothing wrong in a fishing trip being competitive among anglers, so you may find it alright. But I am only expressing my very own opinion.

Why would you want to apply light pressure to the spool if you wanted your spool to be smoother? That very little pressure is exactly what I was highlighting. Again, it is just my own opinion and I have qualified by stating much earlier, I have no experience with an overhead setup.

A person's opinion may not always be right, like how someone can feel so put off by a rod that he gives it away the very first time after he has used it but only later came to realise and became a big fan. So in cases like that, there is absolutly no content of a personal issue. Appreciate your effort of putting things in the right perspective Dr Mark, but the effort to project me as being personal against JM is really uncalled for. Period.

Andrew, I do agree with you that Liu is a very experienced and technical jigger.  Its just me not being able to appreciate the undermining of a weaker jigger (again, not weak but weaker) just to highlight one's superiority. I'm afterall just a leisure angler.

Superior freespool is always desired in any overhead reel but this can also bring about increasing problems with out running line.  The superior freespool has been borne from the OC30's roots in So Californian live bait fishing where there are huge advantages being able to cast live squid or sardines just that bit further.

The problems with too free spool are the over runs and need for thumb intervention.  But most experienced users know this and instinctively feather the spool during the critical release.  During times of inattention during jig release; I have found that line spews off the reel quicker than what runs through the guides.  The slack line sometimes catches around the reel handle or reel clamp causing a little annoyance.

Dave Irving (who has yet to find this forum) has fished with AG many times while living in Taiwan.  He relates to stories of jiggers who would throw the jigs skywards so that they would build up speed before entering the water and hopefully beat the other jigs to the fish.  There is a belief (and a good one too!) that in every reef system there is a big dominant fish so the first jig to get down has the best chance to succeed.

I've seen the DVD of JM in Perth and did not find the comparison of small overhead versu heavy spinner offensive.  I took the comparison matter of factly and found it interesting.  I personally find it hard to fish spinners, a result of a near life-time of using overheads I guess.
