Wire Preferences
January 02, 2008, 12:55:03 PM
Single, 7 Strand, 49 Strand, Mono coated?

What are members preferences when it comes to wire types?

I've never had a problem with chuggers because the wire is primarily out of the water while working the lure, however, I do have my concerns in regards to working stickbaits and the effect wire may have on fish and on working the lure.

Thoughts please...

Personally i prefer more strands of wire than less. Reason being if the fight lasts a while even though we try and minimise it, the head shakes and the rubing up against rock work can weaken points on the wire making it easier to break. So id say 7 strand or maybe 49.

Traditionally have always used single strand wire generally only about 6 to 8 inches of .024 to .028 stainless of what ever breed - nice an cheap and easy to use - have also had problems in the past with mackerel chewing through lighter dia multistrand wire.

get in the habit of checking after every fish and if needed can quickly haywire twist new wire if required.
