pe3/4 popping/stickbaiting rod reccomendations
October 21, 2011, 09:42:14 AM
Am looking to buy a rod for my stella 5000 which has been sitting in the cupboard ever since i bought it so better match it to a rod and get some use out of it :). I want it to be able to handle some poppers and stickbaits around the 40 to 90 gram weight and be around 7ft long or around abouts. Something that doesnt empty the wallet also... so a good value for money rod if i can find one. Any reccomendations let me know
Cheers

Hi Marko, Look at the Berkley Venom Taipan, haven't used one but they are good rods and in that range. If you do a search I'm sure this subject has been raised many times, consider Yamaga's, Saltiga 80TN yada yada.

If its a budget rod, I use a Shimano kaibatsu "Light Pleasure". What many see as a failing is the long handle - I however am blessed with arms like a gibbon so find it very comfortable. Its 7ft 6 inches, PE 2-4 and casts baits in the 40-90gm range well. I've certainly measured casts in the 80-90m range with it (based on the braid marks. I cant comment on 'working stickbaits" as i am not much cop at it myself, still learning. Worth a look in the lower cost range though, but it isnt a Carpenter etc. I use a Twinpower 5000 on mine  or a Saltiga 4500Z.

Personally I use stella 5000 for light fishing whit PE2/3 braid or similar (Power Pro or Tuff line 20 lb, Sun line Super PE 20/30 lbs) paired whit rods 7' or 7'6'' (Gloomis, ST Croix, CTS in 1-2 oz cw range). Usually for inshore casting for bluefish, learfish (qeen fish?), barracuda and bluewater casting for dorado, small tuna (if I find small BFT I change the spot immediatly, if I find big BFT I change set up immediatly  8)), barracuda on average weight of 3-5 kg.
For popping in 40-90 gr range I prefer bigger reel (stella 10000SW, Saltiga Z4500) spooled whit 50lbs/60lbs braid. Actually I use for this kind of fishing a CTS blank 7'6'' offset (specifications on label are: line 40lb, cw max 100gr), similar for power and casting weight to shimano light pleasure (may be a little bit haevy, I never played whit it).
Personally, I will never use stella 5000 paired whit this kind of rods, but is only my opinion  :)
