Yeah that's right, shit happens. It's an inevitable part of traveling with and using GT rods on charters. It's not first I've seen broken on a trip and it won't be the last.

Great read Jay.

Some beautifull images there.

The shot of the Longnose emperor is a ripper as are some of the GT's.

Fantastic, great read. About 4 weeks to go before my trip there ! A quick revisit of the supersized poppers and stickies might be in order!

Epic report Jay - sounds like you deserved it after the first one!  Also goes to show the results when you put the effort into making the most of a bad situation (ie 30knot winds).

Out of interest how did the big gammas go in the rough seas?  Any tips on getting the best out of them?

We managed to work the big gammas in the rough seas quite fine, but it wasn't easy. It's not something that is easily explained, it's more something that you really need to be shown. Best advice is invest in a suitable rod and don't try to work them with a rod that's designed for chuggers. I used my MH80H for the 200 gammas and found that it was adequate enough.

Nice fish mate, sucks about the rod! What happened to the first guide after the break? did that pull out from trying to fight the fish?

Thanks for the awesome report Jay, well done.
Its always hard trying to convert those memories into words, but you nailed it.
Yeah the weather was quite miserable at times, fishing was slow most of the time, well for me anyway, excluding the last day.
But nearing the end of the trip, last day, last hour, it all seemed worth it with my monster class GT.
Even if i didn't catch that fish, the time spent with Rudy as our guide, the Knowledge he passed on to me, That's the stuff that made my trip.
Its not every day you can talk to someone with Rudy's level of experience, probe them for information, have him coach you on certain lure techniques and retrieves, and just generally talk about fishing, it was Great. Cheers Rudy.

Thanks Glen and Jay for the good times had.

Thanks mate, it took me quite a few hours to write up and I really only felt like I just scraped the surface so if there's anything you wish to add feel free.
