I have just had my Mom and Step Father along with a few old family friends from South Africa visit us. We have been playing tour guide around Dubai and Oman. I thought it was tough showing clients around......... but family is 10 times harder! But it was all good fun and really nice to have them out here and show them what we do!
After spending a few days in Dubai seeing all the sights like the Tallest Building, Tallest Hotel, Fountains and multiple Souks (local markets) we headed for our territory, Musandam. I had arranged a 70ft liveaboard dhow so we could stay up in the Musandam for three days and took our 40ft Center Console Al Sayyad with Capt Cameron Mundy one of our guides to help out. It was all a bit of a culture shock from Dubai as Dibba is a rather rural little town. So after many pictures we managed to pack all the gear onto the dhow and left for a 3 day adventure. We took up the Center Console to do a bit of fishing while the dhow cruised up to the area we had chosen.
From the start we got into great fish. We were not using heavy gear and mainly light tackle with small swimbaits and stickbaits. We managed to catch some nice kingfish, GTs, Bigeye, queenfish and sailfish. We were testing some new Duo lures which turned out to be amazing and we eneded up going home with none left. I also had a Race Point Maestro Prototype that I tried out and what an awesome rod paired with a Stella 8000 and 40lbs braid. We caught a 20kg king on the rig on day one and it handle amazingly even casting a 30gr lure! All the guys on the trip have ordered one when they are available, again Mr Sami you make a winner!!
We fished for the next few days with perfect weather and company. We only fished the light stuff as the parents didn't have to much experience on the heavy gear and took one look at a 190gr GT3 Popper with ST76 5/0s and said hell no they not throwing that thing for 3 days!! But we also got our pipes cleaned by some big fish that we could not stop but all part of the fun. It was also nice to fish light tackle as we tend to always be chasing the monsters and forget there is some amazing light tackle fishing.
The highlight was taking all the parents and my family on the boat one afternoon including my 2 year old son Zack and we hooked a sailfish on the KGS and 60gr Over There lure using #2 ST56 trebles and landed the fish. All the family had a front row of the show and the sailie put on an amazing show. We also dropped a king that we estimaited at over 40kgs which bit through 80lbs wire. So in all it was great having the family, doing a liveaboard and catching some great fish. Not often we get to share our fishing with the people we love! Was also good to see Zack was loving skippering the dhow and center console, we couldn't get him away from the controls! Thinking how long it will be till he can start guiding.......
