Sunline Pe lines
Gavin Chau:
I've never used it but looking at the paulusjustfishing line testing site it looks like Sunline tends to break close to its stated breaking strain
Also running some simple descriptive statistics from the data collected by the same bloke shows that under 60lbs breaking strain sunline is around twice as thick for its breaking strain as the average of all braids tested (which actually looks to be a reasonable large sample)
the 60lb is just average thickness for its actual breaking strain
from my admittedly very brief look at some data it just looks like a normal braid - although who knows? it might have some other features like high abrasion or good knot strength or something..... also there is no data for lines above 60lb which would all be 8 strand stuff so the test results could differ
Interestingly the strongest braids (actual breaking strain) for their diameter are generally the hollow braids
Mark Harris:
Guys, please be wary of equating a breaking strain with casting breaks offs.
Shock load characteristics (eg when casting) are different to pure breaking strain (which is usually measured by gradual application of load). You can certainly find high breaking strain lines which are prone to explode when casting (I wont mention the brand!) and vice versa.
Gavin Chau:
Hi Mark,
for sure - shock loads are another thing that there is basically no data for (at least none that I know of thats publicly available) i guess thats all anecdotal evidence
although i for one would like to know which line is prone to exploding!!! (is it pp??)
since I spend most of my time LBGing, the hookups come far too infrequently to have to worry about tackle failures as well when they finally happen... if you really can't say then i guess I will stick with JB
having said that i am currently using suffix 832 on one of my reels (which i impulse purchased and seems OK so far) - apparently it is prone to lose strength relatively quickly though so i'll probably have to change the line soonish :o
