can you change spool on saragrosa 6000-8000?
December 05, 2011, 10:07:29 PM
does anyone know if you can get a shimano saragrosa 6000 and place an 8000 sized saragrosa spool on it because i know that you can do it with the old stella 6000 you can put an 8000 stella spool on it. i'm wondering about this because i'm going to buy a new reel and rod for light jigging and longtail tuna fishing in moreton bay and i'm looking at getting a shimano 6000 or 8000 aceration which is exactly the same as a saragrosa but it just has a nicer look, spool and it has an anti reverse flicker :D and i want an extra spool for a different line class for mid sized kingfish jigging around 40-45lb. also a question which size aceration shold i get since i don't own any shimano bigger reels a 6000 or 8000 :-\? i think the actual body of a 6000 shimano is the same as an 8000
thanks fellows

Hey kasper,
I think in those sizes it's not only the spool capacity but also the retrieve ratio that changes so I'd be lookin at gettin one with a fast retrieve and one with slow so you have a reel for jigging and spinning. If your fishin the line class to match the reel your using both will hold plenty of line for your targets.

Christoffer i know there are 2 types in the aceration range I'm getting the (Hg) (high gear) so higher gear ratio which is 5.8:1 which is ok for light jigging but good for popping and spinning for longtail and mack tuna, the (pg) type has a gear ratio of 4.7. As for size what would you think would be best 6000 or 8000 i will go to the tackle shop for size comparison but i would like someones advice from someone who actually has 8000 and or 6000 sized shimano. As for 8000 and 6000 the only difference is that the 6000 is 15grams heavier and the 8000 has a bit more line capacity, same Max Drag of 12kg, same Spool Size/Stroke (mm) of 60/19.

Hey kasper,
If they have a 8000 in pg and hg models I'd be gettin that. Extra line capacity is always good, but the retrieve ratio is more crucial IMO to the types of fishin your doing. In those model reels you definitely want a pg for jigging or the drive wont last. I have tried using a 8000hg sustain for jigging. Stripped the drivegear in 2 small sessions on 15kg gts using 50lb.

yes i thought that would be the case for a higher gear ratio reel, stripping the drive gear when jigging but I'm only doing light jigging fish up to 15kg. I don't think i will do much jigging with it since i have customised my saltist 6500 and my sealine bull 6000 with carbon techs, power knobs, bearing etc. Question would it be ok to use the pg model for spinning tuna or is the ratio a bit to slow? :-\ I'm unsure cause i don't know hot fast the shimano reels are in lower gear ratio's. As for the daiwa side i was looking at the phantom 4500 and sealine bull 4500 they look pretty good high gear ratio on the sealine bull with 15kg's of drag pressure, the phantom though has a slower gear ratio and only 9kg's of drag pressure. What do you think daiwa or shimano? :-\

I think Christoffer's advice when you are dealing with these mid-market reels is spot on - don't try to use a fast gear reel for jigging. If you are going to buy only one then buy the PG jigging reel and make do with it for casting - the other way around and you will fry the drive gear.

Kaspar, a lot of the Indonesian guys I fish with use these mid market Shimano reels - the ones which are all made in Malaysia: Saragosa, Aceration, Sustain and dropping down to 5000 size, Rarenium.  I have also used all of those myself at various times, mostly by borrowing a set up for 10 minutes when I am out with those guys.

If you are looking at Saragosa versus Aceration, then definitely go for Saragosa. The relatively new Aceration is the one of those 4 models that I have seen most problems with.

I think the 5.2 gearing on a Saragosa 8000 is just slow enough for jigging. The Sustain 6000 and 8000 FE would get the vote for a fast casting reel, and dropping down a size, the Rarenium 5000 is a really nice and great value slow jigging/bottom reel.  If you are gonna use a Rarenium for jigging though, be prepared for some flex as it has a carbon ci4 body.

thanks mark for the advice, alot of the reviews that i have hear of the aceration are pritty good it is just a step down from the twin power and it is exactly the same as a saragosa it just has an anti reverse clicker but as for the saragosa they have a few problem's like spool warping and internal gear problems. i have seen the aceration 8000 pg in action catching big king fish on youtube. i think i will go for a lower gear ratio but mark do you think that ratio would be ok for spinning longtail tuna? thanks mate

I would urge you to have a very close look again as an Aceration is not exactly the same as a Saragosa as you suggest.  Also, you should not really think of an Aceration as a step down from a Twinpower - they have little in common bar the livery.

All reels in this mid-market will have some problems and the only way to avoid those is to go to the top of the range.

As for suitability for spinning for Longtail Tuna... I honestly have no idea as I don't know what techniques would be appropriate in your part of the world. However, I would imagine that it would be doable but hard work with  4.7:1 gear ratio.

yeah i might go to the drawing board and go for a look at the daiwa range like the phantom and sealine bull 4500 they are tough reels cause i've caught 20kg gt on my daiwa saltist 6500 and sealine bull 6000

Kasper,

if you are using slower reels (spinning metals) you might need to downsize your lures to get them to work properly (or crank faster!)

edit: i can see from your other posts that you have plenty of experience with longtails in moreton bay!

yeah well I'm looking for a new combo to chase them with because at the moment in using a heavy snapper spin stick with a shimano stradic 4000 and my sealine bull 6000 on a shimano 15-25kg rod which is over kill but i was thinking of going to shimano for a rig like a 6000 or 8000 reel with a 10-15kg terez but I'm unsure how the ratios in the bigger shimano reels work. From seeing comments mad on the shimano side of things i might go back to daiwa because i have a few bigger reel and they are really tough

if youre going to mainly cast and do only a little light jigging and you only want to spend a few hundred, then i would certainly reccomend you stay with shimano. those daiwa's you mention may be tough but are extremely rough, clunky, heavy tanks.

a 6000/8000 saragosa is a pretty tough little reel just dont go jigging 500grams like Mark does or youll be back at shimano warranty department every 3 trips!

yeah looked at them but i could not resist the daiwa saltist 4500 got it for 200 dollars at bcf cause they gave me a shit one that had been used and was cluncky realy odd. Then i took it back and they gave me a new one and 100 dollars in store credit so i decided to get the shimano terez 10-15kg rod and some 40lb cast away for an extra chrissy present

I've put a 8000 on a 5000 reel, works fine. I've read somewhere that it could be done with 5000-8000 as they share the same body so a gave it a go.
