Rod Selection Help Needed
Mark Harris:
That was my impression as well Brandon but I have never owned one of these, only used a borrowed one. I seem to remember I was using it with a Cubera 125 and it was a quite excellent set up. I couldn't imagine using it with a 180 gram popper, and I am pleased to hear that my impression was your actual experience.
Mark Whitaker:
Chris, quote from Brandon in the "Guide to buying a GT rod" post:
"Many people want a very wide variance in terms of casting weights which is understandable. I can only say that if this is the case, a rod with a more progressive action will be more forgiving in this regard. An example is a Smith Komodo Dragon which will cast a 100g weight competently but will also cast a 200g weight. A Carpenter Wild Violence is also similar in that it can cast lighter lures better than its stable mate, the SP78UHL which is the same weight class but which is designed specifically for huge cup mouthed poppers."
Thanks for the other examples though, its all good food for thought. Its still a while yet untill I hand over the folding and all resourch is good:- especially with the $'s involved!

Brandon Khoo:
Mark, i do agree with the sentiment expressed in this thread so far that you really don't need PE10 for your location. If you have read my guide to rods, you will have noted that i do suggest people go as light as they can get away with.
The KD will cast a wide range of weights but a lighter rod will still be more suitable.

As Brandon says in the Guide to buying a rod post, there is no perfect rod, its all compromise. I can afford 4 casting outfits for GT's and anything else that likes the bait, light and heavy poppers and stick baits, so yes I will end up with an overkill PE10 popper rod!

That's very true but as you are buying 3 rods (and you have one already) at the higher end of things, you ought be able to cover most bases.
