Small boat GT fishing in Mackay

<< < (2/18) > >>

Angus Hulme:
Outstanding stuff Andrew, thanks for sharing. All my GT fishing is done up around the Mackay region, so I can fully appreciate how difficult it can be both to find suitable locations, as well as getting the fish to bite! Big kudos to you.

What do you find are your most successful lures? I could see the R2S Dumbells feature heavily in the pics, any other favourites?

Cheers
Angus

Andrew Susani:
Thanks guys, the boat is a Haines Signature 485SF.  I bought it like this (console not connected):

and built all of the interior decks, hatches, rod lockers, storage up to look like this:

I am very pleased with it as rides beautifully, is cheap to run and is easy for me to handle, launch, move around the garage, but if you were heading offshore all the time, you would definitely need something over 5.5m.  The main problem here is the persistent bloody wind and no shelter, it makes offshore stuff pretty frustrating.

As far as lures go we have found the dumbells to be a good allrounder but I also like the Adhek poppers and stickbaits.  We have not had to go to expensive options to guarantee fish, they have been pretty willing on the cheaper ones.  I don't know whether this is because the fish don't see many lures, or if we are just putting the offerings in the right places.

I don't mind spending the money on something that is reliable, it's just that we have had good success on relatively cheap lures like the dumbells, which perform (bloop) consistently and pull fish when other (more respected lures) are rejected.  Mick, Col and I all prefer poppers, the strikes are just so awesome  ;D

Mark Harris:
Andrew, I know it will ruin the aesthetics but I reckon you would feel so much more confident when fighting a fish if you fitted a thigh high railing to the front.

That minor comment being said, you have done a very sweet job.

Ben Crarer:
Wicked mate!  8)

Sacco Gerard:
All fish except the first one have been taken on poppers - the GREATEST way to catch them = I love this comment, I think that GREATEST is the good word  ;)
For me fishing Popper is the queen of Fisheries
Congratulations for this trip.

This is the downside to fish with two treble hook, often one of two damaged fish.
In this case, it is perhaps not serious, but I've seen much worse.
On the popper personally I much prefer fishing with only one treble, but a big as decoy 8 or 10/0.
that's just my opinion of course.  ;) ;)
