Calstar Gf900m

Hi,
As I live in Perth WA GT popping will be a once a year job probably to Exmouth. I have a Custom made Calstar GF900m by Barry Taylor. So keeping in mind kit will probably be used once a year I was hoping someone can answer a couple of questions.
1. What PE line rating can this rod handle?
2. I have a JDM Twinpower 8000pg is this strong enough? I also have a Daiwa Saltist 4500 and a Spheros 1400 with the complete upgrade by Bluewater.
3.Which of the above reels should I match with the rod and what PE line fopr each reel?
Currently use the Saltist with 20Lb PE on Calstar GF900xl over kill?
While I would love a Dogfighter or Stella I can't really justify the cost over usage.

Hi Gary,
I see from the Calstar catalog listing that the GF900M is rated at 20-40lbs, this would relate to a PE rating of 2-4. As to what reel to load with what PE I cant realy say as I dont have any experience with the models you mention, though I'm sure the others here will be able to give you better advice and be able to expand a little on the GF900M's capabilities too.

Gary, for PE2 - 4, all of the reels you have will do the job. The Twinpower 8000 should be ideal with PE4. I have no experience with the Spheros 14000 so I will leave this for someone else to comment on.

JDM twinpower 8000 is the go cos they have better drag than other  .. i got one of them  .. and loaded up with pe 5 jig man and i got 265m on it  . another spare spool with pe6 only 200m  ..  i bet you better load it up with pe4 cos you will get 300m on it  .. the best braid line for the twin power is the jigman..

I disagree that the 900M is a PE2-4 rod becoz the blank is rated 20-40lb. The rating is for mono. Mono is more forgiving to use, if you want to run braid over it, it should be the next line class up. 30-60lb. Braid is alot less forgiving to use and most braid will break below the stated breaking strain.

IMO eg...

6kg PE2
8kg mono, PE2-3
10kg mono, PE3
15kg mono, PE4-5
24kg mono, pe8

thats how I would class it...unless of coz the rod is rated for braid.

Hon-su is correct in that a rod rated 40lb (in mono terms) does not equate to the rod being suitable for PE4, but should probably be used with PE6.  I am familiar with this blank, though I've never used one, it may well cope with heavier braid.
