Here's my 2 bobs worth:

Lively Lure's Fat'R's skipping popper. #1 was the black/gold model, followed by Green/chartreuse, then pink. I suspect the 'silhouette' of the black/gold gives the longies a solid target to pin over the brighter colours.
Wind them quick. Make them bounce off the water to simulate gar/flying fish.
These work well on scattered fish and schooled up longies.
The strikes are knee knockers!
Other skipping poppers around 12-15cm will work.  The Cordell Pencil Popper is another great longie lure though I'd use a Fat'R's anyday of the week.
Be thoughtful of line management........to get the lure to 'bounce' off wave to wave, the rod tip need to be high and slack line DOES occur and loose wraps of line will cause a major tangle if left unchecked........let the line out between schools to repack and you will have less issues.

I've yet to do much with sinking stick baits, though I have friends that clean up on Daiwa Overthere's and similar lures that run just under the water.  The speed of retrieve seems far less frantic compared to the skipping poppers.

Run any lure across the front edge of the school if they are feeding in a general direction.
If its a meelee of froth and carnage, pull the lure through the school.

I won't go into boat handling/moon phases or leader types since it's already been covered.

Cheers,

Aaron.

Hi All,
I fish Darwin Harbour and surrounds for Longtails and with the average size going 5-10kg have taken to using a 3000 size Stella spooled with 8lb coupled with a 7' 8-12lb flick stick to do the job.  Lately I have started using stick baits for some amazing surface strikes especially when the fish are on flying fish.  The gun lure at the moment is a Rapala Subwalk 07 in Glass Ghost with upgraded hooks and rings. It has the advantage of behing small enough that the tuna are more than willing to take it but it is worked slow enough to induce some heart stopping surface strikes.  It's also the deadliest Queenfish lure ever made....
Cheers,
    John.

a lot of my longtail and mack tuna fishing occurs in my kayak in moreton bay around the rainbow channel off amity, the south of bribie island, off raby bay towards peel and off redcliffe, the kayak is just great cause you can cruse all the way up to the school with out the tuna spooking at all. There are ways to catch tuna on surface stickbaits which is fun but i generally use slugs around 15-25grams you get a lot more hook ups but it all depends on the bait and the day really but with slugs you can get surface hits just lift the rod to about 50-60 degrees and wind till the lure starts to skip along the surface but this is a method for the tuna around the start of spring when the schools of tuna feed predominantly on small white bait. As it get to summer and around Easter i start using stickbaits the yo-zuri adagio which was mentioned is great the yo-zuri slider and for poppers yo-zuri hydro tiger and the maria pop queen. Also does anyone know anymore spots to catch tuna where i can take my kayak to easy off the sunshine coast and in moreton bay? going to target some tuna in summer thanks fellows great conversation

one of the closest spots to access with kayak would be between Caloundra bar and Bray Rock on the Sunny coast, just depends on swell run on the Caloundra bar. Good schools of Longtails and Mac Tuna feed in the channel that runs out towards Bray Rock in summer.

Cheers

Well I missed most of the replies to this thread as after a couple of days I didn't get back to it until now ! I've been building myself a boat and haven't been fishing much - got to finish boat...had a fishing fix lately with some land based spinning and missed a nice longtail that leapt out of the water as I started retrieving an Ocea Pencil. Many casts with no more Longtail action  :(
Anyway some great info shared as usual - thanks to all of you
something clever and witty !
