Saltiga 2010 spool capacities
February 08, 2012, 03:26:13 PM
In the rod/reel combo thread, it has become clear that a Saltiga 2010 5000 size reel has a larger line capacity than the manufacturer states, and certainly larger than the old Saltiga 5000.

I have just re-read Alan Hawk's review and he too makes that point:
The new Saltiga has a deeper spool than the old one, increasing line capacity considerably. I don't measure line capacity by breaking strength because that does not make sense, so I'll say instead that the new 4500 holds 320 yards of 0.013" line (300 meters of 0.33 mm line), and the 5000 holds 270 yards of 0.0145" line (250 meters of 0.37 mm line). An increase of roughly 25% from the old Saltiga. The weight of the reel has increased from the old Saltigas too.

Somehow I completely missed this vital information and it would not surprise me if others have as well. What this does is make the 5000H a viable PE8 GT reel without the need for an expensive after market spool.  As Brandon makes clear in the other thread, he has twice transferred a full spool of line from a SOM 16000 to the 2010 Saltiga 5000H.

Even at the inflated prices they mysteriously seem to command, it also makes the Saltiga 5000H a bit cheaper than a Stella SW10000 with the after market spool which is required to fish PE8.

I think that information deserves its own discussion thread.

I am also wondering whether the 2010 Saltiga 6500 has a similarly increased line capacity?  Can anyone confirm? This would make the 6500H very attractive for those who like to fish with PE10 or PE12 line.

Hi Mark,

In regards to your question about the 2010 Saltiga 6500 H, I own a 2010 6500 and have exactly 410 metres of 65pound Jerry Brown Solid which I believe is 0.4mm.

Manufacturer states spool capacity is 400m of PE 6 which is pretty much spot on.

However, prior to the Jerry Brown I had a 440metres of Varivas super PE in 86pound (39kg) 0.4mm same diameter, so essentially I guess its really dependant on the type of braid you will be using and may fit 200-250 metres of PE 10 or 12 Avani GT or similar.

The reel is slightly lighter than a 18000SW and in my opinion it is more compact (less body with bigger spool) which I feel it balances my rod a little better.

I hope that may help.

Hi Luke - many thanks.

That information implies that the capacity of a 2010 Saltiga 6500 is the same as the old Dogfight 6500 and Expedition 6500, and that the increased spool capacity may be limited to the smaller models.
