cv 79/40 vs ep 82/38
Dan Colebrook:
to the guys who own both or have owned both, could ya please give me a bit of a run down on your thoughts of these too against eachother. we dont get these models in nz as the blc is the most suited to our kingfish. im wanting to get either one of these as my main gt rod at some stage but wont get the chance to bend them or cast them before buying one. i have the blc 80/35 super cobra on pe6 for small gt's overseas and big kings at home but after a propper gt rod thats made for gt's too. will put my sw10000 som spool pe8 on it.
thanks heaps for your thoughts guys. dan.
Mark Harris:
Dan, I have used both side-by-side and I think a number of other members will have as well.
Both are superb rods and both pair very nicely with the reel set-up you will be using.
Although there has been some disagreement on this before here, I think the CV79/40 has a stiffer tip and therefore handles chuggers better. I can't imagine working a GT3 150 with the EP82/38 for example, but that is fine (just) with the CV79/40. I believe the whole EP range are very much stick-bait rods.
So if, as your message implies, you are looking for an all-round GT rod for chuggers and stickbaits, then I would personally go for the CV79/40.

I haven't used the EP 82, but I really like the CV. It's pretty comfy with a 125 Cubera (my goto lure when I'm lazy) but I reckon it's a bit saturated on a Cubera 150. A GT mania 130 is about its limit from the Heru collection. Whilst it's a fantastic rod, I would love to get my hands on an 8' verson for a little more casting distance. If absolute distance is not an issue to you - it will be hard to beat.
Jay Burgess:
You're pretty game asking your CV to work a 150g GT3, Mark! I tried a 150g GT2 on mine once.. and didn't really like the feel so for me I wouldn't dare try a GT3 ;D All personal preference though. I prefer to stick to 130g sea frogs as the limit when it comes to chuggers.
Mark Harris:
On the casting Pete, I have always found CV79/40 to cast further than you would expect from a 7 ft 9 in rod. I think that it because the rod section is pretty close to the length of an 8 ft rod. It's the handle which is some 2 inches shorter.
