Land based GT fishing in Malaysia
February 16, 2012, 03:23:12 AM
Hello

My first post in this forum!

I'm off to Malaysia in July for my honeymoon. I'd like to chase some GTs from the shore but I'm finding it really hard to get info on good locations. A lot of the islands are in marine parks where's fishing from the beach is banned (as far as I understand it). There has to be some good land based GT fishing in Malaysia?!

Anyone have any tips?

Cheers

Tom

P.S I'll probably get out on a boat at some point but want to do most fishing from the beach where I can relax with the missus.

You should go to rompin and catch some sailfish instead. They are great fun.
There are also some really nice resorts over there, where you and the miss can have a good time

Impossibru?!....really?! Any other species to be caught on a lure from the beach?...

Thanks Simon, I'll definitely look into the sailfish idea.

Possibly the odd guppy and not much else. Let's put it this way - I wouldn't go there for land-based fishing
If it swims; I want to catch it!

Thanks Brandon.

What a shame, are the fish stocks that bad then?

Anyone had any more positive experiences?

Thanks again

Same in most of Southeast Asia where there are significant populations I am afraid. The rule is: lots of people = no fish.

In remoter parts though, the fishing can be world class.

same here.. i saw a few gt in the malaysian part of Borneo.. On the fish market. Never saw them in malaysia while snorkling. I read an article about a small island op north west of malaysia Called Tukun Perak or something like that with huge gt, but very hard to get there.
Have you any idea where you will be going when travelling there?

Thanks Mark, I guess the trick is to find a remoter part that we can still enjoy together...

Simon - yes I think I was reading about Tuken Perak (?), it's very remote and raises straight out of deep ocean with no beaches which would explain the fish. Unfortunately not a good place to drag my brand new wife :)

I'm flexible on where to go, we'll probably move around a bit and to some extent it is dictated by the fishing opportunities. I was hoping for an island where we can both relax on a remote beach and spend a couple of hours a day casting poppers. Perhaps I'm just day dreaming...

Thanks for the advice though!

I think instead of trying to catch something at Tukun Perak, you will be infinitely better off trying Fiji, New Caledonia, Australia, etc. It's difficult enough there.

Fish like this make fun

A good tip is to bring your own rods.. I know some guys that have been catching theem on poppers as well, and i had one chasing a small spoon ment for small barracudas, right next to the boat

Nice fish Simon! I'll definitely bring my own gear and look into getting out on a boat.

Kasey, thanks for the recommendations. I'm not sure I'll make it that far this time. We have to start off in Malaysia as by fiancee has family there and we're a bit restricted by cost and time.
