Landing a 320lb tuna in those conditions on spin tackle in 20 minutes is remarkable.  Says a lot for the equipment and fighting technique!

Hi Andrew,

I can't agree more with you  :), the anglers that I know to land fish of that size are few, you literally count them on one hand!
Tashiro-san impressed me with his skill and ability to land that fish solo and quick!

Sami very remarkable stuff,

Very sporting conditions also.

What sort of line were they using?

Can you give us any insight at all on the rods? were they specialised tuna proto-types or GT rods?

It seems like your tuna season goes 10 months a year up there!

Cheers
Andy

Hi Andy,
I suggested to Konishi-san the usage of PE8-10 for this trip and we've been communicating 2 weeks prior to their arrival on what to expect, they fished a variety of line from Sunline, Varivas and YGK,
konishi-san landed his fish on a PE8 line while Tashiro-san had his fish on the Varivas PE10.
you are right we are stretching our tuna season as we figure out the path they take and it is great, i remember 5 years ago when we started, we fished for them in the Cape only, we have 10 month window nowadays as you mentioned  ;)
please accept my apology as i promised not to reveal any information about the prototype rods, when the time comes Konishi-san will present the information you're seeking.
thanks for your understanding  :)

Thanks Sami,

Were you seeing surface action with birds etc. on this day?

It must have been hard work out there.

Andy,
I did not put a report in GT Popping last month but we opened the season very early this year :)
we fished in January 14 and landed 3 fishes, the smallest was 81 inches and the biggest 84 inches on a popping rod, on that day they responded to jig and we saw some birds here and there, in many occasion we saw them busting on topwater without a single bird on top of them.
you see birds when they are concentrating and feeding on the surface, prior to this trip we had an amazing bite on the jig and on topwater, Nick Bowles from Ocean Active will be writing down the report soon.
when we made it to the desired location we saw them busting on topwater with couple of birds, Konishi-san and Ajiti-san and I came in tight right away,
when the wind blow from the north you will see the tuna riding the wave heading south, we saw 2 killer whales yesterday, thousands of gar fish, hammerhead shark, all heading south from the cold water to the gulf stream, it was absolutely national geographic !!

Hi Guys,
Sorry for the late update, been a busy week for us, the following report and pictures are from the last 2 days of fishing in North Carolina with Konishi-san and group!
Back to same spot with the same pattern :D
Guys, for those of you taking drive just for jigging, please do yourself a fever and get a popping outfit or borrow one if you have to,
I jigged for the past 2 times and had no hit whatsoever, all action is on topwater and they are moving with the porpoise, we blind cast most of the day and it paid off, 4 hook up followed by another 2 and we end up the day with 4 out 6, not a bad day at all :)
all fishes measured below 65 inches and we end up releasing all of them!
enjoy the pictures!

   Tight lines
     Sami
